I put a new chrome dipstick/tube in my sons crate motor. It will not seat all the way down in the block. It went in a ways and I'm sure it wont leak but it is still 1/4" from sitting on the shoulder that its supposed to stop at. What would be the best Way to ensure its in deep enough.

My idea was to use a tubing cutter and shorten it the legnth that its up. :dunno: I evnen put a block of plastic on top of the tube and beat it down with a hammer. It WONT go deeper:doah:

Any ideas??

I would stick a bolt in the tube then hit it down, IIRC a 5/16" diameter bolt is the correct size to use.

With the hard plastic block I was hitting it HARD. thought I would kink the tube but didnt care at that point. Still wouldnt go down any more. as is now I'm pretty sure it Wont come back out either

There is still too much "give" in a piece of plastic no matter how hard you think it is. Use the bolt trick and i'll bet it goes down.

:thumb: At this point I cant do any harm. Beating the snot out of something sounds good too. I even lubed it when it went in. Think I shoulda sanded the chrome off. Woulda been easier on the stand instead of in the truck though. I happen to have a 5/16" bolt laying right next to it too.

I've used an open end wrench that just fits over the tube and stops on the shoulder. Hammer on the wrench, turning it every so often to distribute the hits evenly and reduce the amount of "boogering" that happens to the dipstick tube.

Rick, I've seen broken off dipstick tubes on the bottom of the block before, are you sure there isn't "leftovers" in there?
I have also had good results using the box end of a wrench on the base of the tube where it flares out.
I know you have it jammed in pretty good now, but a dab of sealer on the tube is a good idea too.

the block is a GM crate motor:dunno: I havent tried anything yet since I started this thread. But I'll be out there today for a bit for sure. I cant get to the shoulder to hit anything anymore due to it being in the truck:doah: I'll have to go from the top
