Oil filter bypass plug

Ok guys, machine shop is just about done with my 496. Its now near 600hp, and Im giddy as a school girl (not a pretty sight). Anywho, Im kicked back here in my chair reading one of my big block books, and I notice this part where it is talking about the oil filter bypass plug, and how it bypasses at 4psi. Now it got me to thinkin, my motor always ran at 45-60psi before. Does that mean it was always bypassing my filter? And if it is bypassing the filter, does it also bypass the oil cooler?

So I got to reading and I found this part, perma-cool makes it (#14845) and it is an oil filter bypass plug. Now if I put this in, all the oil will always go through the filter correct? What would be the negatives to this setup? Only issue I can think of is if the primary filter (the one on the block, I have another on the line to the oil cooler) becomes plugged it would kill the oil flow. I dont think this would be a problem as I change the oil ever 4-5k, and use synthetic.

Or is there a way to put a higher rated valve in in place of the 4psi (have also read it is 15psi) valve?

Thanks guys, getting confused reading about all these different oil filtering systems, full time & bypass, antidrainback vs not. Im confused. I run a regular AC pf1218 on the block, and a big ole Napa 1794 on the oil cooler line if that makes any difference
 
I blocked the oil cooler bypass on my 6.0, which is somewhat similar to the 8.1. Just run synthetic and youll be fine.

The 4psi is pressure difference between filter inlet pressure and filter outlet pressure. Normally they are very similar in pressure unless the filter is plugged or the oil is very thick (i.e. cold morning). Not sure if it bypasses the cooler or not,

Yes it will. If you hammer on it when it is cold you can blow oil filters apart--ask me how I know.....

If your primary filter becomes plugged, no oil will flow beyond the plug/filter. You hopefully would notice the gauge reading low prior to that occuring.

PF1218 is an anti-drainback version of a PF35. Napa 1794/AC PF932 has no anti-drainback properties and I do not know of an anti-drainback version of this filter. An anti-drainback filter has a rubber diaphragm valve right under the steel disc that has the threads in it. It acts as a check valve so oil can only flow in and not drain back out when the motor is turned off. Normally not a big deal unless the filter is mounted upside down or higher than where the line feeding it originates.

I plugged the bypass on a small block that I built years ago. Provided I let the oil get some warmth to it before I beat on it, I never had a problem with it.
 
Like the others said, keep the filter clean and watch the oil pressure. If you run thicker oil cold, it may blow, so buy quality filters.
 
Like others have said, if you plug the bypass and the filter becomes clogged IT WILL blow the filter apart.

Also, i don't care what kind of oil you run, 4-5K between oil changes is too many miles, you sould be faithfully changing oil at every 3K miles and filter at the same time. If your oil is becoming black that is from too much fuel in the oil which will dilute the oil and you'll have less lubricating properties.
 
Agreed on interval of 3K. I'll be giving the bypass plug a try but will be running a quality Napa gold (WIX) filter. I'll watch my oil pressure and change the filter proactively if the pressure drops. Honestly I'd rather filter the oil on an offroad vehicle with a bit more maintenance than risk bypassing a bunch of junk.
