I noticed a puddle yesterday under the left front corner of my truck. I thought it was coolant until I touched it. It is def oil. I popped the hood and it looks like it is coming from a vent tube by the side of the radiator and dripping on the driverside battery tray. The truck is a 99 sub 2500, 454/4l80.

Thanks for any help you might be able to offer.

Being a Ford guy, I'm not real sure what vent you are seeing, but I don't know of an engine in the past 30 years with a vent tube.
They all have PCV valves and vents tied to the air cleaner.

Sounds to me like its the vent tube for the front end.
If so, then it may be overfull due to water intrusion, or overheating due to a bad bearing.

Usually its 90W, but the factory did strange things looking for gas mileage, and if you are not the original owner, there is no telling what is in there.

Before you go much farther, trace the hose back and see what its hooked to.

It is deffinately the vent for the front diff which sucks major a$$!

Naw, the engine would be worse. There it would be bad rings or worse. Rear end would be next worse, because if its bad, you're parked.

Front end, you can disconnect a axle and drive it until you can fix it. I'm guessing that it is the type with the passenger side axle engaged all the time.
If so, then nothing should turn if you leave it in 2WD and unhook that axle.

I would pull the front cover off first and see whats going on.

If you have a fill plug, pull it first and see if it is way overfull. If you have been through deep water, it may have some water in it.

AAKK, Wrong!!
Passenger side has the shifter. You would have to disconnect the driver side.

Too much other stuff going on at the same time here in the office.

Hasn't been in any water. I will have to look at it. It's independant front does it have a diff cover.

Ouch, Don't know for sure. My Ford with IFS doesn't. Bet its the same. May even be the same axle since mine is a 3/4 ton.

If all else fails, turn the driveshaft and wiggle it listening for noise, looseness, or grinding.

When you get oil coming out of a vent tube, its usually either the vent tube has come loose and dropped down, not likely with yours, or something is getting the oil too hot.
Short of cruising through fires or drag racing it, its usually a bad internal bearing.

If it sounds good, take it out for a spin on the highway in 2wd and then feel the housing when you get back.

If its cool to slightly warm due to engine heat, I would tentatively move it to a medium burner.
Not the back burner, its too iffy for that, but it may be something you can postpone for a week or so.

Just don't use 4wd until you figure it out.

I suspect someone else will chime in pretty quick with more info on that model.

Most folks here work, and don't have access. The good stuff heats up after work.
I'm lucky in that the boss and I have a good understanding, and can surf here all day if I want.

The vent tube in the picture seems to be where the oil is coming from and it is the vent tube for the front diff.

I had my mechanic look at my front diff when he put another transfer case in. He said he couldn't find anything wrong with the front diff. He recommended changing out the fluid and sure enough it hasn't leaked since.:D
