oil leak

can someone help me,i just bought a 1976 K5 Blazer 4x4 with a SB 400,i have a bad oil leak,and can not find it.this leak i thought was coming from the timing cover,replaced gaskets twice,and harmonic balancer seal...still leaks bad,replaced timing cover,and oil pan......still leaks bad,will not leak when engine is idling,but drive a short distance stop,and look under the blazer oil all over the axle......

any ideas i really don`t think its coming from timing cover.....help
 
There are two bolt holes on the passenger side of the block. Probly at the 7 to 8 oclock position. Cant remember which hole, top or bottom, needs a very short /8s bolt with RTV on it. You can place a longer bolt in the hole when you change the fuel pump to capture the pushrod. Just dont forget to replace with a shorter bolt. Open the hood and rev the engine. Mine would shoot oil at about 2000 RPM.

Definetly check the bolt holes near the fuel pump.

When you had the balancer off, did you look at the seal surface? They can get worn by the oil seal. How the steel balancer can get eaten into by the rubber seal is beyond me, but I've seen it happen a few times. I'd look into the holes near the pump first though. Then look towards the intake and valve covers.
 
toomany is right. Check that also. Whats the repair called, speedisleeve or something? The missing bolt on my '73 acted exactly like his. Idling produced no oil. If you drove down the road and opened the hood it was everywhere.

While it is possible to repair the hub, chances are if the seal surface is worn out...then the rest of the balancer is too. I'd spend the $60 on a new stock replacement one...no need to spend $300 on an SFI one though.
 
yep,i sure did check that bolt kenny and it was there,and i plan to but a bolt on that second hole just in case.

I did rev it up from the carb while trying to look for this fracking leak,and while i don`t how many revs i was getting,no tach,and no oil.
 
heres the story on that toomany.....my brother inlaw had it replaced,with a used one,and one i suspect is not a 400 sb balancer,but i was planning to use a repair sleeve this weekend.

If it's not for a 400, then it's probably not for an externaly balanced engine. I'd make sure there is a counterweight in it when/if you take it off. Running the incorrect balancer can do some bad things for the crank bearings.
