how far off the bottom of the oil pan should the pickup ideally be? i am making my own deep sump oil pan. thanks

I think you'd like about a half-inch to an inch. When you make it, put some soft clay in the bottom where the pickup will be in the pan, bolt the pan up, and remove. Measure thickness of clay and.....voila!

no, more like 1/4" to 3/8", 1" is much too far.
