Recently replaced the oil pump and rear main seal on my 6.2 diesel jimmy. Replaced the oil sender unit 1.5 years ago when I rebuilt the head. Found a hand full of beat up metal in the bottom of the oil pan when I was swapping the oil pump. Need to check where it came from, and to see if it is magnetic or not (too damage to tell by shape).
Oil pressure prior to oil pump swap 13-16 psi
Oil pressure after swap 13-18 psi
I usually only use this vehicle for short trips around town. On Wednesday I drove to my daughters for Thanksgiving, I noticed the oil pressure started out at about 15 psi, after 50 miles the oil pressure shot up to 30 psi then started getting shakey needle syndrome going between 15-60 psi, then go to either a stable 15 psi, or 35 psi, or pegged out at 60 psi. Not sure how to proceed, replace the guage in the dash? or replace the sender unit again, the large flucation I believe are not accurate but I not sure if sender is clogged, then unclogged?
I also noticed the coolant temperature seemed to vary if I was going up hill under load, or on the flats, or going down hill. Cruise between 40-75 the whole time, (Non turbo and a real dog going up hills, but otherwise did great). Is that variation normal, or should I replace the thermostat?
Drove a about 240 miles in one sitting, running 36 inch tires, and 4.56 rear differential. Got about 13.5 mpg, is that about normal or do I need to maybe replace the timing chain (runs the fuel injection pump), get slack over time and throw off the injection pump timing. Or is my fuel pump injection just worn out? Replaced the fuel lift pump not to long ago, was thinking about upgrading to an electric lift pump.
