So iv noticed that my oil pressure runs around 30-40 during idle, but when im on the gas its maxed out.

Engine going bad? Bad gauge? Normal?

My s10 ran around 40 all the time thats why im wondering.

Thanks!

unplug the sender and check the guage. I believe unplugged it pegs out. Your sender is probably bad. They're pretty cheap so I would just replace it. If you have a manual guage laying around that can be installed quickly you could do that for piece of mind to test. Myself though, I'd just check the sender.

cool, i will check that out first. the cheaper the better! heh

Thats what my motor does. Runs 40 at idle and 60 while driving. Has done it since it was brand new last summer so i dont think its bad. Mine does it with both the stock unit and a mechanical.

That eases me mind some, hehe. my father in law told me it was normal, but since my s10 ran at 40-50 all the time it concerned me.

I bet its the newer gauges cuz i only see it happen in old or mechanical gauges.

Oil pressure should be 20-40psi at idle depending on engine wear. The more worn the engine the less you'll have at idle. The rule of thumb I was taught was that the pressure should roughly increase 8-12psi for every 1000rpms depending on load. Of course engine temp is going to affect what you're seeing and every engine is different.

The gauge on my '89 always read high when I first got it, 50-60, most of the time, I swapped out the sender with a new one and the reading dropped to within a more normal range of around 40-50 and fluctuates alittle more depending on engine speed.

thanks for the replies guys, @stomis, the temp runs good, always at the normal range, never goes above.
