My recent G/L purchase of an '86 J code engine, to replace a snapped starter ear bolt hole '82 redblock is going well in freshening it up. The issue I have run into is the bolt that holds the oil pump in place is really loose when threaded all the way down.

I found a bolt that will work (1986 Dodge Omni GLHS head bolt I had laying around) but it is, of course, too long. The dealer says the bolt is discontinued, but gave me the specs, haven't had any luck at the local hardware stores though.

What do you guys think, cut the head bolt to fit, loctite it and call it done?

Do you think a used one would work?
I have parted a few.

I would. There are no nut and bolt stores near you? Or order one online? (same specs, not necessarily one for your engine) I've always had good luck at Lowes, they carry everything seems like, and automotive specialty fasteners as well. And in the case they didn't, Hi-Strength Bolt was nearby. Fastenal seems to be in most places too. Or visit a shop with a nice extensive nut and bolt bin? Just some ideas.

We tried: King bolt, Lowes, Home Depot and Ace Hardware with no luck.

I have a McMasterCarr 2 miles from the house, so that will be the next trip, Thanks kennyw. And if that fails I will have to hit up imiceman44.

Thanks guys.:thumb:

I didn't know McMaster had a physical store. If you want to know if they carry it, just look it up on their website.

Ace and Home Depot are not bolt stores. They only carry common fasteners they can sell in bulk.

Their southwest distribution center is 4.7 miles from my house and they do have a small counter to help walk-ins. It is on my route to work, so I will check online and hopefully pick it up Monday.:waytogo:

I would assume one for a 6.5 would be the same, and still available at a dealer??...I would go with even a used "correct" bolt than some regular hardware ,that might not be the right style or length,or strong enough myself...it probably has a special shouldered shank or head to it ..
