I'm in the middle of sealing up the motor. So far I've replaced a couple freeze plugs, changed the oil pan, put in a one-piece oil pan gasket. I put in a new timing cover gasket and crankshaft oil seal, water pump gaskets. I think I'm almost "done"

Anyway... I just drained the oil pan after having new oil (cheap Pennzoil because I knew I was going to change it soon) in the truck for about 25 miles. The oil looked pretty dark with a greenish tint to it (coolant?... but I thought oil with coolant in it was chocolate brown and milky).

I guess the last job I have to do before throwing the motor out is head gaskets right?

Edit: No smoking at tailpipe. I do get black specs that fly out of the exhaust at startup only one one side of the exhaust (true duals). I think that might be a valve seal or piston ring issue.

When the head gaskets went on my 6.2 diesel I had anitfreeze in the oil, but it didn't mix into the milkshake you'd have expected. Perhaps it was because there wasn't much in there and it stayed in the bottom of the pan mostly? Either way, I had the green streaks and tinge to my oil too.

I didn't need that to tell me my headgaskets were gone though...my 6.2 would hydro-lock itself when shut off hot, and I had greyish steam from one pipe although not a lot.

Running short distances? Getting it up to temp to burn off the condensation?

Doesn't explain the green but it took me a little while to realize that I have an oil cooler and that the oil will always come out dirty because of it.:doah::haha:

mine doesn't do that,(well not anymore) i have oil coolers on both the '91 pick-up and the '89 Burb, the Burb did have dirty oil when i first got it, but after a few closely spaced oil changes, and then continue with regular spaced oilchanges, or even better, when it STARTS to look dirty, i try to change it out.

It may have had alittle to do with oil coolers, but they way they are mounted, they look like they should drain back when the engine is off.

i suspect it's just a combination of dirty oil through out the system, and dirty components from running the oil too long between changes.

do an oil change, run it for a weke or so, do another, run it for a bit, and do another if you need/want or can afford to do it till it comes out clean, that's what i did to the original motor in the Burb, and then just kept it clean as mentioned by checking it often, and changing it when it started to get dirty.

all this does not apply to Diesel motors, those are just dirty from their birth
