I gor crafty and did a box that lets me store 5 qtz of engine/tranny oil and dedided to mount it inside the engine bay where the AC box use to be, so is this a good or bad idea?? i decided this way couse because it lets me take advantage of the free space.

Heck, I don't see why not. I have seen lots of people just shove a qt. nest to batteries and the radiator. Post some pics! Is it a ammo can, or did you fab a box?

Shouldn't be a problem as long as you don't try storing gas or anything pressurized there.
Like propane......
And make sure its mounted strongly. Oil gets heavy when you are pounding though potholes.

My 96 actually has a spot under the hood for storing things. It came factory with it. Trucks that were set up for dual batteries didn't have it.

Its pretty much fabbed. went to a local shop that make carts like for hot dog stands and that type of stuff and they made a box for the oil and then couldnt find a nice place to place it so i decided what the heck engine bay so i grabbed a couple of pieces of steel plate, did some cuts, folds and welds and mounted the sucker ...il take pics tomorrow.

I'm curious as well. I was thinking about redoing the engine bay on Big Red. It'd be nice to have a storage compartment up there instead of just wedging bottles under the battery

My '96 also has one. Think I have 4 quarts plus a fuel funnel, some rags, and extra oil, gas, and rad. caps in there.

Actually makes for a really handy tray too. Washer bottle is under it on mine and holds about a gallon.

I wished my engine bay looked even half that clean. I ziptie everything but it still looks like a rats nest.

SO you say 96 to xx has these boxes? Might go junk yarding tomorrow:thinking:

Never really payed attention. My '96 K1500 and K2500 with the 5.7 have them. My '96 K2500 with a 6.5 doesn't though, cuz it came with two batteries. I think my roommate's '02 Tahoe has one, but I haven't really payed attention. I don't remember it in the '92 or the '94...but that was a lot of years ago.

The 02 tahoe won't have one.

I dont' think its that constant that they came with them, but 96-98 trucks, and 96-99 burb/tahoe (90's body style basically) should have them.

The rag is where the second battery would be in a factory dual setup. Usually I have a quart of oil and tranny fluid and a gallon of coolant plus funnel and rag.

Searched, looks like they only came in a handfull of 96-97 trucks

family's 97 CCLB dually 454 has one :)
I don't think our old 94 1500 z71 had one
where's our custom box pic?
