Can I use a oil/water temp gauge on my transmission? Just seems bad to pay $60 for a tranny gauge when I can buy a cheap temp gauge for $20.

Sure you can, as long as you have the right fittings and the scale goes high enough - which is why you'd probably wanna go with an oil gauge and not a water one. But are trans & motor oil gauges really that differently priced? I bought Autometer oil temp and trans temp gauges to put on my truck, and I don't recall there being any significant price difference. The only actual difference on the gauges is that one face says TRANS TEMP and the other OIL TEMP anyways. I'd be embarrassed myself to charge $40 extra for two extra letters. :D

Sun Pro Gauges(cheap a$$) sells a gauge that just says 'temp' on it, $15. They don't sell a specific transmission temp gauge. Then on the box it says that its for either water or oil. Gauge goes up to 250 degrees which is plenty...

Heck, you could just add another stock GM temp sender/gauge and do the same thing. :) Of course wouldn't mount as easy, but would be easy to get the pieces for.

I always thought it would be interesting to do this temporarily to check things like transfer case and diff temps, just to see what they run at in my particular vehicle.

Transmission fluid is an oil.
