well, i acquired this truck to build it into a mud truck. well, i got the 12in lift on and the one tons in, and was doing some exhaust work and an oil change today. I cut the exhaust off right before the trans x-member..... then changed the oil and fired this tired beast up.... well, the pass side exhaust sounds HORRIBLE....very very very loud ticking coming out of that side. im thinkin it's a valve/lifter or something...i dont know too much about motors, but have torn into them before(no biggie).

the motor has 212k miles on it, and is all stock. i have never had it over 5MPH, just pull it around my yard/driveway up to this point. it's strictly a trailer queen, and has no tag on it.

any idea's guru's??? is a 454 in my future???? that would put a hold on things for a while as im broke as hell. haha....

thanks guys

oh yeah, i can go get a video if anyone thinks it would help things out at all......

IF it was fine before then maybe its just the sound of the open exhaust or when you cut it it disturbed the (donut) gasket from where the exhaust pipe meets the manifold that would be my first guess get a video. Or a blown exhaust manifold gasket get a 1/2 heater hose hold it to you're ear and start moving it around till you find the loudest point and go from there.

i used some old hose i had lyin around...and it's def. out of the manifold...it was there before, but not nearly as noticeable....with the cat and muffler and all..... never really thought much of it. i just went and got a vid....the sound on this does it no justice, it's pretty bad.....

it's uploading to photobucket right now....

I'M thinking burnt valve then if not an exhaust leak. Make or buy a leak down detector and you will surely know.
It is an air chuck you put into a spark plug hole and turn it to top dead center of that hole and either air comes out the exhaust, intake or valve cover. Then you know or a simple compression check might show you which hole is down on power at least.

is the reminant of the pipe touching anything? as the engine runs it thumps, and that movement could be tapping the pipe against something?

normally a burnt valve, or faulty lifter is something you know as soon as you fire up the engine, even with mufflers and whatnot.

does the truck have A.I.R.? could you be hearing the air injection into the manifolds???

as to a big block..... a replacement smallblock is cheaper than dirt. id say rebuild it as a 383 and call it a day :)

normally i would also lean towards the exhaust gasket, my truck has a leaking donut right now that sounds like a tapping lifter, but he said he cut the exhaust off.... cant imagine there would be enough back pressure from an open exhaust to hear an exhaust leak....... :dunno:

I wouldn't trust any noises I hear from an open exhaust pipe. It's just too loud to tell much of anything and since he said the noise was there before and only got louder after the muffler came off, putting a muffler back on will at least let you diagnose the problem without going deaf.
