Just picked up a pair of caddy calipers that need to be rebuild. I have heard that the easiest way to get the piston out of the caliper was to use my compressor and blow air into the bleeder valve and the piston would pop out. I did this with just the residual air that was in the tank from the day before (probably 20psi) and it didn't really move. So I plugged the sumbitch in to get it to about 100psi and stuck the air nossle in the bleeder and BOOOOOM! :eek1::doah:About 6-7 parts exploded out of the caliper. Skeered the fock out of me. Glad I didn;t have my hand in the area.

So, my question is, how do these parts go back together? Does anyone have an exploded view diagram they could post up? Should I just go to the Caddy dealer and they may have a diagram? What say you non-idiots.:D
Hoby

Yeah, it is possible someone will have a diagram for you, but if not then post up a pic or two and we can figure it out.

Hey Hoby, you could always get rebuilts at the parts store and turn those in for cores (with alll the pieces in a bag).:doah:
You never know, it might be so cheap it's not worth fighting with.:D

For future reference the pistons on the Eldo calipers must be rotated to move them in or out of the caliper casting. When you buy a rebuild kit it should give you a diagram of all the pieces and how they go back together (at least the kits did when i rebuilt mine a bunch of years ago). Mine had a broken piece inside that was no longer available so i had to make a new piece.

Also, 76-78 Eldo calipers are the ONLY year and model (with an e-brake) that will work for a rear disc conversion. Even though the bolt spacing is the same on many other calipers the piston is different and won't allow the caliper to fit over the rotor.

The 79-85 calipers will work on a 6 lug rear end with different rotors. I'm not sure which rotors to get, but I used them with rotors I got from Black Widow back when they were in business. I want to say they were ford or caddy rotors, but I can't be sure.

Yeah, Scott. I didn't realize that until the thing was blown apart. I just thought the rubber seal wa holding real tight, which is why I went the air compressor route. Dumb question: I assume by your post that the rebuild kit is specific for these calipers and not a generalized kit, right. A diagram would be awsome as the local caddy dealer wasn't much help this morning. Also, do you guys have any opinion on how to reconditin the e-brake spring. It's a tight mofo with a lot of corosion and paint. I'll take a wire wheel to all of it but should I just leave the spring bare metal or what can i coat it with so the spring doesn't get all gunked up with thick paint? Thoughts? Thanks guys.

A note for future attempts... put a 2x4 where the brake pads normally go to contain flying parts.

Ya know Ken, I believe when I heard about the compressor trick I do believe they mentioned something about that and also to keep your little piggies clear of the piston too. I just remembered too late:crazy:

Big Blzn did that bronco site not help piece it back together??

Actually, Kenny, it helped a lot. It didn't have all the info but is a great start and has good info. Thanks for the post as I saved it in my favorites file on my PC. Thanks Bro. :D

No prob. Mine came apart fine but there were too many pieces:mad: Remans for me when the time comes. I do wish I could procure the brackets type instead of the levers only. Oh well

Good Luck
