Alright guys, I found a 14bff. I will have to drive 40 minutes away to pick it up, but for $150 complete with wheels brakelines and all, I think it will be worth it.

For starters, its off a 73-80 Chevy camper speacial 3/4 ton 2WD truck.

Will this work on my 86' K5 Blazer?? What will I need to do to make this one work? The guy told me it had 4.56 gears with a detroit locker. Should I go for it???

did he add the detroit? if not, it prob isnt a detroit... they only came stock in cucv gubment vehicles, def not 2wd camper trucks..

I heard his nephew in the backround say it had a detroit, but I told the guy I kinda doubt it. He is an elderly gentleman and he said he wasn't for sure. But definitly was sure it had 4.56 gears. I was kinda iffy too when I heard detroit.

What will have to be done to make this work. I don't want to pick this thing up knowing it will be a nightmare to bolt into my K5. I think just the shock mounts will have to be moved on this one??? Will the leaf perches be ok? Brakes etc....??

What about the width?? I will just have to measure mine I guess.

probably a gov loc, seems a lot of camper special trucks had them. the only thing different is the shock mounts, they are lower then the 4wd ones.

everything else will bolt up no problem.

Make sure you have 4.56 gears in the front as well, or you won't want to put it in 4wheel drive untill you do.

and if its one ton, the shock mounts are on the same side, but you said 3/4 so it should be fine... different ujoint and wheels...

u-joint and 8 lug wheels. You may need/want to reposition your shock mounts.

Sorry for this dumbass question, but what would happen if I went wheelin with 4.56 rears and 3.08 fronts??

You will push the front and kill your t-case

front diff turns faster than rear diff bind on drivetrain=breakage!

$150 I would do it and just get some 4.56's for the front and do the rear and the front at the same time.

Holy ****!!:eek1: :eek1: :eek1: I don't need that!! Once I get the 14bff I will first find out what gears it REALLY has and a matching set will be in order for the front.

You ever figure out what the stickers were that were on your x CDF K5?

So you can ID were it was stationed out of?

If they know what it has for gears then they had the cover off. Look at the carrier. There will be holes in it, "windows" If there are 3 around the carrier then its a gov loc. If there are four it may be a detroit. If there are little gears looking through the window its open. If looking through the windows you see a spring, and no gears, its a detroit.

Ok, the numbers that I can still see faded on the gas cover are "J87D" and there is a plastic sticker in the center of the gauge cluster that says "L4".

Not sure if those are good numbers, but that is what was on the gas cover and right front side of hood.

Hmmmm ok those are not what will tell us where it was from. There would have been like U16= utility 16 or B3112=battalion 3112.

Is there a number inside the paperwork or drivers side door jamb that would be like 01X243 or something like that?

You never said where the auction site was that you got it from. Can you post up that info? Or pm me the info?

The guy I got it from, got it from an auction. Not sure which one. Let me go look in the door jambs and glove compartment. BRB.

Well, new info to me. I highly doubt it is a former CDF vehicle. I just saw an old sticker in the doorjamb that says "COUNTY VEHICLE J87D". There ya go. I still wouldn't mind finding out more about it.
