**see lower post**

ok, i didnt get a response in my other thread, does a D44 have a crush sleve or just shims? My master rebuild kit only came with front and rear pinion shims........ /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/1zhelp.gif /forums/images/graemlins/1zhelp.gif /forums/images/graemlins/1zhelp.gif

If memory serves, the D44 uses shims instead of a crush sleeve.

SWEEEEEEEEEET! so i dont need to crush that damn thing, i hate that part! I have come to find finally something i DONT hate about a D44.

can anyone second that info?????

p.s. Shag, that carrier had a broken spidey /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif Im so glad I have good eyes /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

No crap, a broken spider, eh? Let me know how much it cost you to replace it so I can give you the money to cover it. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Re: ok, im confused, does a D44 have a crush sleve or ..............

Yes, a Dana 44 used shims to set the pinion bearing preload.

Re: ok, im confused, does a D44 have a crush sleve or ..............

dont sweat it, what happened was i pulled it all apart to clean it and lube it b4 i started bolting the ring gear on and once it was apart i could see what looked like a hairpin crack on a spider gears back, so i put my magnafluxer on it and could see it good, looks to me like a flaw it the cast, anyways its cool, i have another spidey here /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif no complaints from me /forums/images/graemlins/deal.gif

Re: ok, im confused, does a D44 have a crush sleve or ..............

ok, if a d44 has NO crush sleve then how do you set the preload, assuming im right by thinking that the depth is set by the shims. is the preload set by torqueing the nut or Also by the shims? Im totally confused on this.

Re: ok, im confused, does a D44 have a crush sleve or ..............

Pinion depth is set with shims behind the inner pinion race and pinion preload is set with shims between the front pinion bearing and pinion gear.

Re: ok, im confused, does a D44 have a crush sleve or ..............

i thought the bearing next to the pinion gear WAS the inner?

Re: ok, im confused, does a D44 have a crush sleve or ..............

The bearing next to the pinion gear is the inner bearing. The outer bearing is next to the pinion yoke.

Re: ok, im confused, does a D44 have a crush sleve or ..............

/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif ok, just sounded kinda backwards. whats wierd is that in the set i got 3 shims that are HUGE and dont fit onto any of the parts... /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif there like 3"

Re: ok, im confused, does a D44 have a crush sleve or ..............

Those are for setting pinion depth, they go behind the inner bearing race in the housing. I think you might have been confused and thought I said they went behind the inner bearing which would be why you asked about that.

Re: ok, im confused, does a D44 have a crush sleve or ..............

Actually i thought you said behind the race, which Id never heard of /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif i never seen that before but you be the machinist not me, im just the installer. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Re: ok, im confused, does a D44 have a crush sleve or ..............

If you had the correct diameter shims you could also set pinion depth by placing shims under the inner pinion bearing, but if you do this and don't get it right the first time then you have to remove the pinion bearing and risk the possibility of damaging the bearing. If you use shims under the inner bearing race you have no chance of that happening.

Re: ok, im confused, does a D44 have a crush sleve or ..............

What I did was hone out the old bearing so it can slide on and off the pinion shaft. The inner race shims(bigger ones) I just put the same amount as what was in there previously. Now with the bearing honed out the adjustment is cake.
Have fun /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
