ok ok another guestion about full hydro

if you were to compare hi steer,crossover and hydro assist to full hydro money wise what would you saw the diffrence in price is???

also as far as steering quality is full hydro way better???ive driven forklifts before im just wondering about the on trail capability...
 
Full hydro is great on the trail. The only downfall I can think of is that if the system fails, you have no way to steer. As for price, I've been checking that out. A engine mounted snowplow pump can be used, and everything else is cheap exept for the steering valve. The cost about $400 new. I've been keeping my eyes open for on off a HD forklift or yarddog.

even if you have hydro assist i have heard if you bend the ram ect its a real pita to get off the trail....i kinda want to buy a kit just not to have to deal with the hedaches...
 
Full hydro will cost you more than crossover unless you piece together junkyard stuff (that will never perform anywhere near as well as an aftermarket setup).

Full hydro will have much more steering power than hydro assist and won't be affected by suspension flex at all (even with crossover the steering changes a lot for me when the suspension flexes). Again piecing a system together will compromise the power/reliability of the system.

I'm all for going with the used/cheaper option for most things but I will be going with aftermarket steering stuff when I go with full hydro.
 
using a single sided ram instead of a double ended will cut down on the cost of a full hydro setup but not steer as well in both direction. I'm not afraid to peice together something to save money since mines trail only.

I probably have as much or more into my hydro assist/crossover as I would if I had gone full hydro from the start. but I bought everything new. a junkyard 2wd box would have been a lot cheaper but might not have been any good.

plus I listened to the guy making my hoses instead of getting what I wanted and ended up paying too much and not being happy with them. so I had to spend more to have the ends changed. :doah:

I easily have $900-1000 in my setup and its not hi-steer.
 
here is my biggest concern...i have to get a set of high steer arms and im running a ford 60 so i have weak knuckles from the get go...i think if i had full hydro it would be smart to invest in a set of dedenbears from the get go...but thats another 500..

i think what i might do is buy a set of hi steer arms and crossover and run it then later i will sell that stuff and go to full hydro if i choose to...my 57s move my front axle foward 5 to 6 inches if it becomes to much for the crossover i will just move the axle back with a zero rate...
 
get a double ended ram and mount it using the stock tierod holes in the arms. build a strong guard around it. problem solved. no worries about tearing the top of your knuckles off. you don't have to spend any money on hi-steer arms either. more clearance between the top of the diff and the engine or any crossmembers.

I did mine in stages because its cheaper that way, and I got the pleasure of ripping the steering box off the frame and not being able to wheel for three months of summer while I fixed it. in the end it would have cost less time and aggravation if I had gone full hydro with this kit. I would have spent more time on the trail too.

See if you can find pictures of Stephen's (part owner of ORD) Wally. In the last couple years he switched to full hydro and used the stock knuckles. He has a brace that ties into the stock tie rod location to help distribute the load across the whole knuckle. I thought that was a great idea. Always remember that you can weld extra material to the knuckle because its cast steel.

yeah im pulling the tags off this week...im basically paying insuance and taxes for no reason cause it never gets driven..i think the way i want to build my truck its not suited for the street...

But it keeps the ram and its protection down low which will hang up on rocks. I have seen pictures of broken knuckles at the stock tie rod location too.

thats why I said the TOP of the knuckle, we all know something is gonna break eventually. :D
 
i was just on wfo's site and it looks lke i can get a complete hi-steer kit w/crossover and a kingpin rebild kit and a tir rod for just under 800 bucks...i know i can prolly piece togher a full fydro kit for that but it seems like the other is tried and true...

i will have to see how money goes and just go from there i guess...
