Why is the fan on my 87 K5 so much smaller than the one on my 87 K20? Both 350s. Alsoo the K5's fan has fewer blades. I have that in the K20 now, until the wrecking yards open up, seems to run cool enough. But why are they different sizes?

PS--this morning I was able to slide the fan out w/o removing shroud, just like you all said. I guess I just needed to see it in the daylight.

K5 is half ton. K20 is 3/4 ton. 3/4 tons since they are a heavier duty truck are geared more towards handling weight. extra weight means the engine is working harder. Since it's warking harder it's generating more heat. So they put a fan on it that will move more air. Since the K5 is more of luxury type ride they put a fan on with fewer blades because it's quieter.

I think that the "standard" GM truck fans are 5 blade designs, while the "heavy duty" fans are 7 blade designs. There are also different size clutch fans. The ones for heavy duty applications are much beefier than the standard ones.
