In another thread I have been trying to figure out why the engine is sputtering. Someone suggested that it could be a bad mechanical fuel pump and my crankcase could be filling with gas.

I thought I had checked that already...but being absent minded like I am these days, I apparently hadn't.

A dipstick check looks like the oil is way high...I don't know if I can smell gas in it or not because I have nasal allergies and can't smell anything.

I know the next step is to dump the oil and replace the fuel pump.

What else should I do or look for?

Couple of things. First is that one or more of your cylinders aren’t firing causing the fuel to wash down the cylinders. Need to check all spark plugs to see if they’re getting good spark and also their condition. Second is your carb may be out of adjustment or need cleaning - it might be dumping too much fuel into your cylinders. Forget what you diagnosed in the other thread, but have you done a compression test? —> blown head gasket letting coolant foul plug.

I gassed the oil pan once

Changed the oil, fixed the problem. No trouble after that

I changed the fuel pump and the oil and filter. I let it run for a little bit, but I can't say for sure that there was gas in the oil. I thought there was, but the amount of oil that came out perfectly filled the 5 quart jug.

My oil dip stick tube is loose too...wish I could get that to fit tighter so I would know I was getting a correct measurement.

I will drive it tomorrow and see if I still have the other issues...if I do then there was no problem with the fuel pump after all.

No gas in the oil, No gas in the oil...Amity, as you know, means "friendship".

So you can't smell? Hold a lighter up to the oil on the dipstick. If it pops, it's water and if it lights...well, then, it's gas!
