Im putting my dana 60 back together, can I just leave the dust shield off without any adverse affects? The thing looks like a flimsy piece of crap that is just going to get bent up anyway.

whats a dust shield ? ( i live in the north east salt belt ! ) ha ha

most of them have rusted off a long time ago around here. no problems i have seen.

on a d44 how do you hold the brake caliper then? The banjo bolts hold onto the dustshield.

the few years of the full shield 44 not much to do. the rest and 10 bolt went to 1/3 sheild and tack welded on tin. you can pop the tin off.

U leave that part just hack off the rest. On the dana 44s I seen the dost shields are really thick. On ten bolts and 60s they are like paper thin sheetmetal so that part with the threaded holes stay there

So you would suggest cutting it off if i am going to be running alot of mud?

I bought new ones when I built my D60. They have held up fine, haven't trapped anything for me but I mostly desert run, and were cheap. I think I got mine from LMC or Classic Industries. There is probably pro and con to having them. Not having them exposes the rotor to abuse, but as stated, some folks find they trap mud. If you are running mud a lot, might be consideration.
