1982 GMC Jimmy w/ the 6.2.
The following bits are new or rebuilt:
Heads (rb)
Injectors (new)
Injector pump (rb)
Glow plugs (new)
Tank has been cleaned recently (truck sat for a while)
New K&N air filter
All other filters are new
I'm running it with an HUMVEE-style intake manifold without an EGR valve.
She starts beautifully under any conditions, runs a little rough at first (of course), and then settles down to a smooth (for a diesel) idle within a minute.
Power seems to be okay, and as you would expect, bottom-end pull is great. Trouble is, whenever I put my foot in it past throttle tip-in, I cannot see behind me for the smoke. I mean, have you ever seen the films of Navy ships laying down a smoke screen? THAT'S what it looks like.
Point her uphill (I live in Colorado), and it's slow and blocking out the sun. If I shift down (700R4, rb) and keep the RPMs up, the smoke goes away so long as I keep my foot just past tip-in. If I start to push down on the pedal, and she looks like a locomotive, only smokier.
The only color is black, although there is a little blue. It is an old mill, so that's to be expected. No white smole at all, except for just a hint of it when she's cold.
My guess is that the injector pump is pushing too much fuel into the engine. There is an electric (Mr. Gasket) lift pump, as the regular lift pump wasn't lifting anymore. The pump is good, the linkage is worn.
My mechanic tells me that he's worked the timing as best he could, and that the I/J is turned down as far as it'll go. I'm running quality fuel and alternate between Diesel Service and Red Line products.
I think that she might be running a little cold. I took the factory oil and transmission coolers out of the (rb) radiator, and plumbed them into Derale coolers, and she runs pretty cool (under 200*, anyway). I cannot remember what temp t-stat it has. Heat, of course, effects combustion. Might it be too cold to combust properly? At idle, this thing mists smoke, too, a lot if she's in gear, a lot less if she's in neutral or park.
So, what is the problem, and what do I do about it?
Thanks
