Do I need to prime it? Fixing to put the new dizzy in the Chalet and if I need to prime the oil pump I put in, now is the time to do it.

If I need to, what's the best way to go about it?

That make a piece you put down the dizzy hole. Put it on a drill and blam instant oil pressure.

Other way you can do it is just turn it over by hand with a breaker bar a dozen times, it'll get oil where it needs to go. In all honesty though if it hasnt been sitting forever I wouldnt worry. Primary reason to re-prime a motor that has been sitting is drained lifters.

been sitting for about a year and a half. That's what I was wondering - if you prime to lubricate the engine, or the oil pump itself needs to be primed.

if the engine has been sitting for over a year, remove the dizzy and prime it, the new oil pump will be ok once installed, it's submerged in the oil anyways.. i think Autozone rents that oil pump priming tool too, don't remember as i have one personally.

Just drop the distributor in and remove the positive wire from the coil or the coil wire itself and crank the engine. The engine will have plenty of oil on all the bearing surfaces even after sitting for that long so now you just want to get oil into the pump so the engine doesn't have a "dry start" once it fires up.
