was out in the panamint valley area for several days. one of the mines had this small block sitting on a stand... looks chevy-ish? dizzy out back, bellhousing looks like what im used to seeing... starter and firing order look like SBC -is that a powerglyde???

the orientation of the spark plugs (straight in from top of head instead of in through the exhaust side), shape of heads and center bolt valve covers threw me and my buddy. Guessing this was from well before my time, but anybody know what this was???

Do you watch Ask Jeff Williams on youtube? He's annoying but a smart geologist that's heavy into gold mining.

no, but i played a geologist on tv...

just kidding. I will look that up. I do have a cousin who is a geologist, and i spend a lot of my very little rec time in the deserts around here.

Has the road Panamint City improved ? 40 years ago, was necessary to winch over boulder x2 the size of a CJ. I have only ever hiked there.

Not a Poly. Poly has exhaust like an LS or small block Ford.

I think it's 50's Studebaker.

Looks very much like a 50’s era Olds Rocket motor to me.
Not swearing that it is but it sure looks close to one of it ain’t one.

I think it's one or the other. The Stude engine is so similar to the Olds and Caddy V8's of the time that the Caddy intake actually fits the Stude.

Correct me if I'm wrong (someone here always does!), but the firing order doesn't really help, except to rule out Cadillac and Ford. That order was used for Chevy, Pontiac, Olds, AMC, Chrysler, DeSoto and Packard/Studebaker. Maybe early Pontiac or Olds was different. But for Ford, you almost have to re-arrange the order since they have 1-4 on one bank and 5-8 on the other instead of odds to the left and evens to the right. Man, that confused me the first time I was working on a Mustang distributor.

IF that's where we were? we thought we were looking for "jail", but were likely in the wrong canyon. that was my first time in the area with a 4x4, and I barely glanced at the map before following My friend in his jeep. He has been out there for the last couple thanksgivings exploring the area.

whichever canyon it was, it is still rough. no winching required, but I had to stop once on the way in to stack rocks for a rear tire -to get me up and off of a "granite VW" before my rear axle tube could hook it and make me dig in with the other tires... and had to stack 2 rows of rocks on the way back out to get me across some nasty ruts and down off the rock pile and into the bottom of the wash for a while. It was slow, tedious, and uncomfortable trying to rock hop in the Blazer for over an hour straight each way while trying not to get too far behind the 4 door locked long arm Rubicon (there were also some actual sections of trail intermixed that were not TOO bad - that was a nice relief while it lasted.. but seriously at least an hour of it each way was not fun)

that was Sunday, and i needed to head home later in the afternoon. I was getting ready to call it and throw in the towel just before the Rubicon made it to the end and got me on the CB to tell me there was a lot of cool stuff waiting. worth it? yes,but... yes.

when i first posted "buicK", i actually meant rocket... i had been online searching, and the rocket was as close as I could find. mostly some early hand drawings of the engine from early adds... later model photos i found of the rocket were just a little different.

man! i find so many online that are sooooo close!
-olds rocket
-studebaker
-packard

i keep coming back to the exhaust, and 2 bolt valve cover. Is that 3 mounting bolts on the center of exhaust manifold??? i would think i could find a photo somewhere:
-3 bolts on the center exhaust with 2 head bolts directly above
-outer exhaust manifold bolts are angled, with one higher and the other lower

I just hunted around. Not the Studebaker 225 or 259 engine. The 3 bolts on the center port for the exhaust manifold are 1 top/2 bottom on the Studebaker.
