I run an old Hickey Sidewinder on the K10. Interesting story behind this winch being my dad’s buddy bought this exact winch on his ’78 K20 as a dealer add-on when his truck was new. A few decades later my dad’s buddy had long sold his ’78 but low and behold he kept the winch and sold it to me for $150. I would like to replace this winch with another old school relic, a WARN or Ramsey winch bumper fitted with a more modern and much stronger winch. You know, you just have to have a strong winch in case a buddy rescue is in order
An old sidewinder is not very strong but it is all kinds of ‘70s groovy! I also run a 10K mounted to the rear bumper so this ole Sidewinder really doesn’t see much action. More times than not I need help getting out of a jamb than a forward winch to pull me further into a mess. Actually, only once do I recall using either winch to rescue myself and it was when the rear fell into a sink hole on a very tame trail (TinCup Pass). Seems my winches are always used so rescue other trucks while their winches rescue me.
The Sidewinder is one LOUD and SLOW winch! The cable is just a little bitty 5/16 thread to boot and very short. It is better than having nothing on the front though. This day we had to tie more straps together to reach a tree than the cable was long.
