I don’t think it’s possible based on how different the pads themselves look online but I was just curious if anyone has tried putting a 73-80 dash pad on an 81-91 dash. That’s what I’d like to do with mine since I have a nice wood grain trim piece (the one that goes on the passenger side).

You have to use the bezels and trim to match the pad.

Yep, I believe the metal underneath is the same, just match all the trimmings to the era of the dash pad.

oh really? I thought I remember someone telling me different awhile ago, interesting.

Not that I don’t trust @bigjimmy82 but can anyone else confirm before I drop $400 on a new dash?

Late to see this, but I put one out of a '90 in my '79, and the VIN slot was off because of the addition of front corner speakers in the later trucks.

To my knowledge they fit, I haven't tried it so I cannot confirm. I think worse case scenario you'd have to move your vin plate. There are actually two variations within in the 73-80 year bracket. The 73-78 had a vin plate on the B pillar so there is no cut out in the dash for the vin plate. The 79-80 had the vin plate on the dash. As mentioned above, you'll need a gauge bezel that matches. You have to go all in from what I've heard and read. The other thing is that the 73-80 dash pads were held in with clips instead of screws, but I think you can work around that.

Why not just get a wood trim piece for the newer style dash?

Ok got it, I know my old dash used clips and screws so hopefully the clip locations are the same at least. I just got my dash in today, it’s a 73-78 style so I’ll have to make it work, I’m not worried about moving the vin but I didn’t consider not having the corner speaker grills in the old style dash, I’ll have to figure that out. Thanks for the help guys!

Pics? They had that burlwood trim for a while. I think maybe the real oak ones in mine came from a Starcraft Suburban, so aftermarket. But...I'm having trouble picturing how this is hard to make. Are you talking about the long dash piece for PS or what surrounds the instrument cluster? I have made that before and it's a lot of work.

I assume you're planning to buy a new reproduction dash either way. You don't find OEM ones in decent shape very often.

I don’t have pics at the moment I’ll get some later, I have a wood grain instrument bezel and wood grain trim peace for the passenger side. They both fit an early style dash not the 81-91 one that originally came in my k5. I didn’t think the early style dashes would fit my blazer but apparently they do so there’s no problem with the trim pieces now. Yes I just got my dash in today from lmc it’s a reproduction.

If you would post up your results and satisfaction with the product, please.

And I have always had good response from LMC the couple of times that I had a problem, so..

Will do, it will be a little while before I install it I’m sure. I took it out of its box and it seems very well made, who knows about fitment though.
