I just got an air compressor from a Cummins truck engine. It is rated at 30 cfm at 1250 rpm at 125 psi. My question is should I convert this to run in my K5 with either an electric motor or belt drive of the engine, or just get a Viair? I'll be using 1 or 2 air tanks off of a semi depending on how they fit. Thanks for the input.

I'm assuming it's a belt driven compressor so you'll want to mount it to your engine and run your accessory belt around it. It would take a LARGE electric motor to make it do much of anything. What brand is the compressor? I think Yorks are used on big rigs as well so look for an ID tag somewhere on the compressor. I run a York 210 with a 2 1/2 gallon tank and it does everything i ask of it.

It is a twin cylinder with a water cooled head, lubricated with engine oil and was driven by the engine gear train. The tag is painted over, but I'll see if I can read it later.

It's definately not a York since it has a water cooled head. Yorks are a twin cylinder with an oil crankcase though. Snap a pic and post it up so we can all see what it is.

Here's the info. Its a Bendix tru-flo 501 from an 855 cid Cummins Big Cam. It is about twice the size of a york 210. Here are some numbers; 41.3 cubic inches, 3-5/8" piston x 2" stroke. The 210 specs out at 4 CFM at 90 psi while running at 1200 rpm. This thing puts out over 7 times what the york does. I didn't realize it was that much overkill.
How long does it take you to fill your 2-1/2 gal. tank.

Sounds to me that you might be better off trying to sell it, and buy a york setup. Sounds like a lot of overkill to be belt driving off a small block.

A York 210 means 2 cylinders and 10 cu in. I can fill my 2 1/2 gallon tank with the engine idling in about 30 seconds or so.

If you're dead set on running a truck type compressor, take it to your local truck salvage place and trade it for a belt driven one off of a late 80s to early 90s 466 IHC engine. I would think they would rather have the one off of an 855.
