Hey guys...need some help here..85 K5 with gm goodwrench 350 edelbrock 1406 ..all stock as far as i know. Got a dead cylinder (number 8) and I have checked everything i can think of..swapped the plug..the wire..cap and rotor..checked for crossfire...even took the hei dist off my camaro and tried it..still dead. At idle i can unplug any other cylinder and get a bad miss...but unplug #8 and no change. I know what your thinking...figured bad head gasket..nope...compression check came back good..(well so so..135lbs..all 8 are within a lb or 2 of each other). I rotate the motor over and valves open and close all the way, checked for broken valve spring and everythings fine. Guys im lost..it was running fine then come home from work one day and its idling like dogsh*t...wierd thing is..when i have it in gear (which ingition problems usually show up more under load) as i eas the power on its missing bad until rpm is around 1500-2000 all of the sudden picks up power like the miss went away. Heres the wierd thing..i did this with #8 unpluged and it acted the same..all of the sudden jumps like it picked up a cylinder. Guys..im at a loss...i can drive it and get down on it and it runs good..actually pulls pretty good..but at light throttle misses bad..shit sitting at a light is a terrible miss. I even thought valve timing but that would affect all cylinders not just one.. What am i missing??

I would try a leak down test. Maybe that will show something??

What does the number #8 spark plug look like after running it. Wet with fuel or oil...maybe burned and lean?

You may have a head gasket blown between two cylinders...seen a few that didn't let much compression leak into the other cylinder during a compression test, but made for weird running at lower RPMs..
One engine I saw had a slot or groove "cut" between the cylinders by the flame travelling back and forth between the two cylinders, almost like a cutting torch did it...that could "fire" the other cylinder, even with the plug wire off..

I’m watching this one because I’m having about the same problem. I’ve deduced mine down to a blown head gasket. Changed out the intake, carb, and distributor and it ran awesome and then last week it started running like hell. I thought I had my timing off but it was fine several days prior. My exhaust sounds off now, almost like a popping niose that I’m thinking is two firing at once because of the head gasket. I can also hear air bubbles after I turn it off but I checked the oil and it looks fine.. other than the oil, everything else points to the head gasket. I ordered a Fel-Pro kit on Amazon for $36 and it should get here Tuesday.
