How the heck does a guy get the top of an SM465 back on?

I bought one from the junkyard tonight to get the hydro bellhousing shift forks etc from. I took the top off, and while the coating on the shift forks is quite noticeably worn out (is there anything a guy can put on there to replace that coating?) I think they'll do ok, the forks in my 4x4 tranny have no coating at all.

However, I went to put the top back on, but it won't go. The right side slips down like it should, but the left side won't budge. I have it about halfway between reverse and neutral, but it won't go on.

The shifter itself must be halfway into reverse, and then as you lower the top on you must line up the fork and corresponding shift collar for reverse. It helps if the tranny is level...
