one of the best mods i've done to my rig recently...

i used white paint instead of metallic and it worked good too. It does create a more orangish/yellowish light to the gauges as that off white blue stuff was to get rid of the yellowish light.

I've done this mod to all my trucks works great!!!!

x2 on all 3 of the trucks i/brother own

This is by far the BEST cheap mod you can do to our trucks.

Had my gauge pod apart anyway (converting it to NOT use the printed circuit board... maybe a write up later, it was pretty easy to do), painted the back of the steel piece between the gauges and plastic lens silver, what a world of difference. I've never had an old gm dash that I could actually read at night.

What brand of paint are you using? I did this today with Krylon, and it' not as reflective as yours. It's almost like the metal flake size is too big so the finish is kind of rough. It's still better than the yellowed plastic, but I think I might be better off spraying some gloss white over the silver.

i don't remember what brand - it was krylon like - whatever you can get at auto zone. i sprayed both the blue backing of the black piece, as well as the yellow plastic.

I'm gonna try this stuff when i do mine:

Dupli-Color introduces Nite Lites™, a nighttime reflective coating. In dark conditions Nite Lites™ will reflect light that is shined on it. Reflective coatings and products have been used mostly for safety applications, but now you can create a unique look with it as a detailing product. The coating can be applied to most automotive paint and accessory surfaces. Nite Lites™ is ideal for spraying bumpers, helmets, children’s bikes, car door jams, fence posts … just about anything that needs to be easily seen at night!

I was thinking of doing this mod but using some mylar reflective material, Id cut it out to fit and glue it on. That mylar is I think 99% reflective.

What do you guys think? will it work?

I got that night lite stuff, it was on clearance at ac delco auto part store for $2.88, cant beat that.. I also got a clear coat just because it was so cheap, do you guys think I should uise a clear coat? it couldnt hurt right?

Im going to use motor block black gloss paint for the metal cover, will that be ok? I figure since its a high temp paint it couldnt hurt? and ill use a clear coat on that as well. what do you think? am I set? They also sold me on some oil/grim/ect.ect. remover as a prep before I paint.

Cool

I'll have to try this out when I take apart my dash, and spare dash panel!

OK i have my dash apart and all the screws out ready to pull the gauge cluster but one thing is stoping me how do u disconect the speedometer cable from the cluster? HELP ITS COLD OUT AND I WANNA BRING IT IN SIDE TO PAINT IT IN THE BASEMENT!!!

there's a clip on the back of the speedo to hold the cable into place. i can't remmeber if you lift it, or depress it, but find the clip and work with it. slides out real easy once you get it worked out. kind of a bitch tho.

Easy solution as well...go under the hood, and feed more speedometer cable into the cab. Usually there is enough "slack" to pull th egauge out far enough to see the cable clip.

Thanx guys i finely got it to come off ( YOU DEPRESS IT ) painted all that i had to paint and it now looks good and thats saying alot caz i couldnt see anything before
