One piece oil pan gasket, and other big block gasket related questions

Has anyone used, had good/bad luck with, or have a suggestion for, one piece oil pan seals...?

Also, I'd like to get some better valve cover gaskets. Maybe a style that doesn't require sealant if such a thing exists. Like the steel core rubber ones or something:dunno:

I'm about to pull a motor from one truck to use in another, but I want to hopefully cure some leaks permanently if that's even possible with a big block Chevy lol

Gasket style is like this if you haven't seen one.

I remember the felpro being a good one for both.
 
I read some stuff about certain ones not working with the stock pan. Or that it leaked still, etc. That's why I figured I'd ask..

I do know it leaks oil from the back side... And I'm hoping it's not a rear main. Especially since it's a rebuilt motor supposedly.

Now how long ago it was rebuilt is really kind of up in the air .:dunno:
 
X 3 on the Fel-Pro gaskets..

The valve covers,I always used the ones with an "R" at the end of the part #,those are the rubber ones..they had no steel insert in them back when I used them,they may have that now ?..

The only one piece oil pan gasket I used was one for an '86 305 I put in a '79 C-10,the original had one tear in it--you can even re-use them as long as they are intact,with a little black RTV on them..
I recall the Fel-Pro one for that engine was quite expensive--but Auto-Zone had an "economy" version that was still made by Fel-Pro,but was like $20 instead of almost $50..looked identical to me!..
 
I used that Felpro 1 pc oil pan gasket on my current motor (Mark IV, 454) with a stock oil pan, it installed easy and it sealed great.

For valve cover gaskets I've been using the Felpro Performance 5/16" thick cork laminated gaskets for 25 yrs and LOVE them. I install the dry, they seal great and using come apart without tearing to be reused again. For valve cover leaks, spreaders are your friend for thin covers.

Typically, if I can get a gasket in the Felpro Performance product line I will as they are a better grade of gasket.
 
Yeah, felpro is my go to for gaskets.

I know that there are steel core, reusable diff cover gaskets out now. So I figured I'd look that style up for the engine and seen those.

I think I'll go ahead and order a set up. Just wanted to see if anyone liked em :waytogo:

I tried to use the rubber over steel core valve cover gaskets once but they leaked horribly (for me). I prefer the cork / steel set.
 
I was going to try silicone/steel or nitrile. Tad more expensive but may be worth it. I figure as long as I don't crush em they'll be around a while anyway. Ill almost never take em off once it goes together.

Maybe a cam and intake change down the road..

I agree, those laminated cork gaskets do a wonderful job. They are often reusable too.

'91-up aluminum valve covers use an o-ring seal rather than a flat gasket. Those work well too, but you have to grind on them a little to fit older heads and there's no room for roller rockers.

Have you tried the lube locker gaskets?

I like the cork lam as well especially for valve covers on these old cast iron heads. I glue them to the valve cover and put a thin smear of grease on the head side and they come off without sticking or tearing. Just go easy on the installation torque so you don’t smash them.
 
I had good luck with the felpro, blue one piece gasket on my old 302 ford. Definitly worth the cost.

Not sure if big blocks have the different gaskets around the timing cover, like the SBC does.
 
I used the silicone (not sure if they’re steel core) valve cover gaskets and they’ve been great, but spendy.
 
I used plane ol gaskets with some sillycone on either side, before bolting it down. Never had any leaks.
