open air cleaner

If you think about it, there is a lot of room in a K5 engine compartment so the air temp is going to be higher than is is outside but its not going to kill anything. Im running an open K&N on mine and i like it a lot more than my stock cleaner but that thing had about a 2" opening.

My brother has an 85 silverado and he cut a piece of sheet metal and put it where the lid was. It gave that tired 305 a bit more pep.

I think the whole open vs. stock thing is a matter of preference.

This is an old thread, but I have a question....If I switched to open element would I need to change anything? like tune the carb?

Theoretically, changing to an open element air cleaner on a Quadrajet can hurt performance because air is not directed over the throttle blades in such a direction as to keep them open. (thats how they STAY open BTW, airflow) Your crankcase breather would need to be capped with a filter of some type, or plumbed into the new air cleaner lid, but for all intents and purposes, changing your dirty filter or flipping the stock air cleaner lid is going to do the same thing as an open element...from my "testing", thats going to equal nothing. it must all be in the filter element itself, unless you can determine how hot the air is that ends up getting to the motor, with snorkel and without. You can also get one of the 80's 305 "tall" filter assemblies, believe the element is 4-6" tall.

Why insist on counting when the ring gear has the tooth counts stamped in?

Just remember guys, most of you are dealing with computerized vehicles. No matter how simple that computer may be, you've got sensors( especially newer vehicles) that report to the computer any changes in airflow, etc. This causes your computer to compensate for those changes. Sometimes the result is good, sometimes not so good. K&N designed the replacement filter to go inside the stock cleaner for a reason. It gets the maximum out of the vehicle without modification.
