What's the better way to go? 2wd Steering box or just swapping the sector shaft? I'm kinda leaning tword sector shaft cause it seems a little easier. Let me know what you think. This will be the first time I have attempted to crossover steer something. Any pointers? The crossover will be on a D60 that already has it that I am hoping to be buying soon...

I think swaping the box would be easier. Wouldn't you have to take it off the frame to swap the shafts? No sense in tearing appart two boxes. It's only a couple of bolts to get it off.

If you have the whole box, it would be easier to do the whole thing. You have to pull the pitman arm and that should be easier in a vise than on the truck. However it is easier/cheaper to ship the pitman arm if your buying it from far away.

Isn't there something with the hoses to the pump won't work? Thought I read that on here...you have to redo lines or something if swapping boxes, right?

If you're mixing and matching a box from the old style (73-80-something, compression fittings) and the new style (80-whatever-up, O-ring fittings), then yes. Doesn't matter 2WD or 4WD, as in any given year the fittings are the same between the two.

That is, you can swap a 2WD for a 4WD as plug-n-play (as far as the hoses go!) in the same year range. Make sense?

I see... so an 84 2wd should bolt in to an 84 4wd. right. Thing is, I can't argue with the price of the sector shaft....FREE

If you have the sector shaft I'd use it.
Why buy a box when swapping the sector shaft is so easy??
Remove the Pitman arm and unbolt the top cover and you got it made.

Fill the reservoir disconnect the dist and crank the engine while turning the wheel.
The fluid will drop some and you should be done.

Link = Error 404 :(

Link fixed. Just think, me,

I agree with just swapping the sector shaft. It can make a mess but is easier then bench pressing an awkward steering box. A little advise the sector shaft only comes out with the steering straight ahead, it took me a while to figure that out:doah:

Agreed

Yea... That could have been bad not knowing. I'd have broke out the BFH a little early. Then said a real bad word real loud.

I would have to say which is easier depends on the model. At least on my 6.2 equipped '90 it would be a real PITA to just swap out the sector shaft with the box still in the truck.

I would swap the sector shaft but, you better make sure its the right one! There are 2 different types, skinny or thick teeth on the sector shaft

Teeth that mesh with the gears in the box or teeth that mesh with the pitman arm. Not worried about the pitman arm, it's already on the sector shaft. Not to worried about the gear box either....it's off an 85 and I have an 84.
I'm guessing the teeth would be pretty obvious, right? If I hold them both up side by side that is...I should be able to tell the diff, right?
