Opinion on 3/4 ton axles and 36" tires

Re: Opinion on 3/4 ton axles and 36\" tires

fwiw, there are some D44 with thicker tubes.

I'm going to run 37's on a 10bolt front! I can build a few of them for the price of a stock, crappy D60 that need rebuilt. I'm not going to be doing rock crawls and stuff I just wheel around for shits and giggles and run over stuff. If I ever step up to 40's I'd think about a D60 but I dont have money for a 60 or 40's /forums/images/graemlins/histerical.gif

RUN WHAT CHA GOT! When ya got it and enjoy it /forums/images/graemlins/deal.gif

I don't think you'll have many problems with 37s on an open 10bolt, especially if you treat it well.

I've never broken anything with my front 10B and 35x16 boggers but I don't beat on it real hard and I don't go out every weekend anymore either.

[/ QUOTE ]

You still have 20 year old u joints in yours too, don't you?

[/ QUOTE ]
Yep, never broken any front axle parts before...And that is with probably the "most breakable" 35" on the market. Maybe I have been lucky but 3 days ago I pulled one of our trucks out of the rice field out to the road and I was spinning on asphalt with my foot buried in it as the tires started to smoke and I didn't break anything... so I don't think I'm going to look for a D60 anymore. /forums/images/graemlins/ignore.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

I would say Paul should be fine with 36" Ground Hawgs if I can make mine last with 35" boggers. /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Re: Opinion on 3/4 ton axles and 36\" tires

If you still have 20+ year old wheel joints in your truck and you've never broken it, it's pretty obvious that you haven't ever wheeled your truck in any real capacity, reguardless of tire size.

Re: Opinion on 3/4 ton axles and 36\" tires

You'll be fine. I just wouldn't lock it and detatch the rear driveshaft and try to get it to nose wheelie /forums/images/graemlins/yikes.gif

[/ QUOTE ] You don't get much harder on it than spinning on asphalt anchored down behind, enough to make the tires smoke pretty good. /forums/images/graemlins/shame.gif

I haven't broken anything because I don't mess with rocks and am easy on it at times...and I don't have a 38x16 TSL and heavy steel wheel hanging off it. /forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shame.gif

Re: Opinion on 3/4 ton axles and 36\" tires

Most of the time when something breaks it is because the tire had no traction, spun, and suddenly grabbed a nice bite of traction causing a sort of shock wave through the drivetrain to the weakest link. If someone is smart enough to make sure that they avoid that as much as they can then parts can last a suprisingly long time. But no I'm not worried much about my 20 year old wheel joints because I wheel less and less these days and I have placed the most amount of punishment that it will see on it the other day so I am not very worried...and if one does break...BFD, I will fix it. /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

Re: Opinion on 3/4 ton axles and 36\" tires

You've missed my point. The whole intention here isn't to decide whether you've been fourwheeling or not.

The point is that your testimony about your 10 bolt holding up well to 35x16s when the wheel joints are over 20 years old doesn't hold much water.

That said, I don't really think there is much of anything that can be done to an open 10 bolt front with a 35 or 36 inch tire that can break it on a regular basis, but I could be wrong.

I sure know that it doesn't like 38.5x16s on steel wheels much. /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

[/ QUOTE ] I'm not debating if I "wheel" or not, I'm over that crap. I am just saying that I have put my 10B under some pretty hard abuse without problems and I'm not worried about it. /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

Re: Opinion on 3/4 ton axles and 36\" tires

I wouldn't be either with 35s, not even boggers. Not in an open axle anyway.

Re: Opinion on 3/4 ton axles and 36\" tires

Kinda like how I'm not really worried about the 30 spline '60, until I get my lock right in a month or so. /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif

Re: Opinion on 3/4 ton axles and 36\" tires

Run the 44, leave it open, and don't worry about it.

Re: Opinion on 3/4 ton axles and 36\" tires

Okay, so most everyone belives a D44 will live with my 36" Ground Hawg's providing I don't beat the snot out of it. Let me ask this though. Any upgrades to the D44 that won't cost a arm and a leg ??

Re: Opinion on 3/4 ton axles and 36\" tires

Good u-joints would help a lot if you've only got stock in it right now.

Re: Opinion on 3/4 ton axles and 36\" tires

HOLY $h!t those crane knuckles are expensive. I think I would run the 44 and shop for a D60. I saw a Dana 70 front for 600 in the paper the other day. In fact, I think I'll take my own advise on this one. Maybe I'l hit the lottery some day and will travel around wheelin all over the place.

Re: Opinion on 3/4 ton axles and 36\" tires

I am runnin a 44 with 5.13 gears with 39.5 super swamper tsls and no broken parts of course no rocks for me as i think they are lame just mud and poker runs for me!!!
