Opinion on off centered drivtrain.

So Marv, have you had any problems with the ujoints? Cause now not only am I putting the u-joints to work verticaly, I am also putting them to work horizontally.

Horizontal, vertical, it doesn't matter. The only thing that matters is total angle.

Correct, but it could have a negitive effect on slip joint plunge (too much change as it cycles) and cause binding under torsional loading of the driveshaft.

Ask anyone who's seen me flog the squirrels -

You let people watch you do that??

I always thought is was sort of a private thing (unless you're Paul Reubens)...

:haha: .... I tell ya.... With this rig I'm swingin a whole 1600 cc's of displacement, and so I'm floggin' my squirrels all the time in front of everybody!

Try to figure out ways to offset the weight and you'll be alright. Such as putting batteries as far to the opposite side as possible. Carrying spare parts on the opposite side. Windshield washer fluid and coolant reservoirs mounted on the opposite side.

Something like a fuel tank should be centered. As you burn through 12-20 gallons of fuel... that can be up to 120lbs of "weight change" throughout your trail ride side to side. I notice the weight change... it'd hate for it to be side to side changing.

You could always add another seat and get yourself another wife/girlfriend. haha.

I'm going to be battling this myself. Wile the motor/transmission is centered, I'm running driver drop front axle and a rear axle heavily offset to the driver's side. And my fat ass isn't even counteraced by my dual batteries mounted under the passenger seat. And I'm not getting a fat girlfriend.

Dating a fat chick is like riding a moped. It's pretty fun until your friends see you.
Don't get one with big hands, either. It makes your pecker look smaller.

I think you will be fine, But as mentioned-It could have a negative affect on the slip- You should be fine, just get a super spline slip.

What I was thinking. As Ramsey noted, do need to pay attention to the slips too.

What really matters is what the corner weights are. Ideally any difference would only be front to rear, not side to side.

Easy tool to check this: Weld old 1/2" drive socket to a piece of rectangle or square tube. Square up the drive flats with the tube. On opposite end weld on a small tab. Make a verticle foot that the beam pivots on, at a KNOWN ratio, that is tall enough for the tab to contact the underside of the top of the rim with the beam level to slightly down at the tab end.

Operation: Put a BEAM type torque wrench in the socket and hook the tab on the underside of the rim. Push down on the wrench until the tire lifts off the ground. Have a helper put a piece of paper under the tire. Se the tire back down. While helper is lightly pulling on paper push on wrench. Note wrench reading when the paper *just* slides out from under the tire.

If you want to know the actuall weight then multiply the reading by the beam ratio. Otherwise just work towards getting the same reading across each axle.

You'll want to put weight in to simulate your weight and whatever/whoever also goes with on trails/trips.

Fantastic little trick! I gotta remember that, very obvious, but never would have thought of it...

And the question was about u-joints, so that's all I commented on. Too many variables in the rest. Like having a high roll axis will cause it to pull out of the slip with N droop on one side, and have plenty of room on the opposite side. Having a low roll axis could neutralize or reverse it.

You can buy them, or they used to be sold by roundy racer shops anyway (Longacre?). Such simple thing to build that I' figured most here would rather build it.
