opinion on winches

One thing to keep in mind when looking at synthetic rope is to check the heat rating. Ramsey's rope is not cheap, but it is rated to 400 degrees, while some I have seen is rated around 300 degrees.

If you use your winch a lot and don't let the brake cool, then you could melt the rope... :eek1:

The brake is inside the drum on most winches and the longer run times on the winch, the hotter the brake will get.

I have seen Amsteel blue melt before...

Score one more for the 8274, the brake is not in the drum so no melting line problems.

Winch which?

within the debate on winches is there a sub-plot ? The Warn 8274 is considered the industry standard amongst the LandRover boys here, but they also rate the Superwinch andthese get modified by a guy called Dave Bowyer (Winching expert) and sold as Goodwinch.
But i was wondering, i recall MileMarker selling their winch here was hydraulic powered. Runs off the power steering pump. Never overheats. slower than Warn but so wot? Only you gotta have your engine running to run winch naturally. Not good if engine conked in water, say. But then if engine conked, you're relying on the battery, till it goes flat!
So there are pros & cons...
2 cents from me for what its worth.
