Opinions needed - painting my grille

What to do with the grille?

  • Repaint the black parts satin black. Touch up. Ignore the not so shiny chrome trim.

I recently was given a CUCV brushguard for The Blazer. I'm painting it satin black via spray bombs. While standing there looking at it I realized my grille is a little sorry looking. It's rather worn and faded and the "chrome" has seen better days.

1 - Should I just repaint the parts that were originally black with the satin black? I'd have to tape off the emblem and the chrome parts. Work intensive but doable.

2 - Paint everything except the emblem the satin black? Kinda liking this...but how do I prep the "chrome". Scuff, prime, and go?

3 - Something else that can be done quickly on a moment's notice on my day off?

Being that I own an 89 i'm partial to that grill and think it looks good with the chrome. I say repaint the black but leave the chrome alone.

Bump (ers).

I dunno. The "chrome" isn't purty. Some corrosion and other **** on it. I guess I can always redo it later.

are you going to stay with the two-tone blue on the K5? I think a black grille would look alright but it may be out of place with the two-tone paint job.. i dunno, hard to say.

maybe try to paint the black only to start, see if you are happy with it, and if not paint the whole thing (minus the bowtie)

I'd do that. You can also get chrome spray paint to touch up the chrome.

I was thinking of the grill trim, which isn't really chrome, just chrome colored plastic, but he could re-chrome the bumper.

Just repaint the black areas, then clean up the chrome with some 0000 steel wool. An all-black grill would look out of place considering there is chrome all over the truck. That's my thoughts anyway.

I'm kinda torn. I hit the chrome with some degreaser and a green scrubbie pad and it looks decent...however the stuff still isn't terribly pristine. Dings, corrosion, scratches, etc.

I dunno.

I'm getting it repainted end of the year. Not staying with this color scheme. Probably a bright or dark blue. Thinking the only shiny on it will be the rims, mirrors, and bumpers...but not sure.

Mines a gmc, i did it all satin black and it faded after 2 years to flat black. maybe too much black for some of you tho. Everything is black except for the large red gmc letters. Its been holding up pretty good, i used a scotch brite pad then wiped it off with 3m degreaser, i used krylon satin paint. I did like the chrome tho, im not sure what looked better. if you look to the pic in my sig and the one in the avatar you can see what i mean.

I went for safe and taped up the chrome and went at the rest of it.

Started with Ace brand satin black and now using Krylon satin black which I suspect are the same.

How many coats? Thinking 3 plus the primer.

More on that later.

Grille looks good. So does the CUCV brush guard.

Much better, and the chrome looks better too. Maybe the new black just makes it pop more?

do the bowtie black too
granted my whole truck is, but I like the chrome with everything else black. This one is billet, PCed semi-gloss black

I broke out the green scrubbie pad with some purple power degreaser and hit it. Seemed to work like WD40 and steel wool on a chrome bumper. It's still not pretty as it has scratches, a bit of corrosion, some dings, etc but it's shiny again with no haze.

Nah. I like the "Chevy Truck" yellow emblem. Although I may pop it off. Has water in it and the thing is a bit faded. Might replace it or just try and dry it out. Might just forget about it.:D

on the brushguard i moved the bars infront of the headlights over some so they are out of infront of the high beams. Looks good, all black prob would of been too much black.
