Have you ever built something and when you get it done it's just not quite what you'd hoped for?
So I got a great deal on a M12000 Warn winch. That means time to make a bumper to put it in. I had built my own spring perches in the front that are farther forward and also lower than stock. In hindsight I wish I would of kept them the stock height but I had it in my head that I needed the extra lift to fit 40s or 42s. Im running stock 56" rear leafs in the front. anyways that's what I have to work. I would of liked it to be up higher for better approach angle but this is what I ended up with. I could of chopped up the frame rails some more and cut the valance but I didn't want to.

Anyways what do you think, keep it?' modify it?, start over?
 
I think it looks odd due to the side wings sticking above the center section, and not going to the bottom of it. My vote is rework the wings to be flush at top and bottom with center section so it looks like 1pc

Edit: awesome work though. And the wings would be sweet with some flush mount LED's
 
I don't think it looks bad, just a little disproportionate. Maybe add something into the space between the wings on the side. The top looks unfinished. You could add a stinger or some tube in that section would finish it up a little.
 
I like the over all shape and how tight it is. I also think it's needs something coming up in the center, but I'm really partial to the old Warn Tran4mer style of winch cradles. I'd like to see something going up each side of the winch cradle and across about the hood line, not so much a stinger but more of a rectangular shaped U. I'd also like to see reaching out towards the ends of the wings. It will greatly stiffen them up.

I know what your saying about the wings and cradle not being flush but I didnt like having the top of the wings too much lower than the valance and if I would of made them extend to the bottom of the cradle it would of gotten way to huge and low to the ground I thought?

I plan on adding something to protect the radiator area. I've never built a stinger type bar before. I used to really like them but some seem to get way too oversized now. I'll probably bend up some mock ups out of conduit to visualize better. I do think something will balance the look out better
 
Nice work, I think if you filled in that space in the center so it is flush with the wings the lines would blend together better. A grill guard/stinger tied in tight where the wings attach to the center section might just do the trick too.

Regardless, form follows function and I think you have something that is going to work great.

Plus digging you fender trim too, those wheel openings look nice!
 
So looking straight on. I would add a peice that goes from the bottom of the winch mount to the outer wings. I would take it out to the inside of the tire. Looking straight on.

Not sure if it should just be a peice of square tube or even round, or if it should be filled in.

Grab some cardboard and tape and go!

I like it. I would do a more brush bar type stinger following along the radiator core support line to the hood line, not a giant stinger coming out forward...then change to some synthetic winch line. that way you can loose the roller fairlead and go with a flatter aluminum fairlead. The first time you hit anything its gonna be with that roller fairlead and its gonna get wrecked. That will also change the whole look/ approach angle. Try some square LED offroad lights in the pocket under the wings and next to the frame. That will visually make the wings appear wider and is a great protected spot for the lights.
 
i'm fine with the upper stepdown.. perfect for a light bar.. stinger of your choice, your choice..


the bottom, not so much.... while i appreciate the tight, dainty wings, it does look way "disjointed" to me..... I'm not exactly sure what the correction should be tho.. i'd have to sit on a milkcrate with a beer and look at it.....

could you do an angled back piece of plate that goes from the bottom, to the wingtip? like 30 to 45 degrees I certainly wouldn't be worried about clearance with that... and i think if you put the plate on a different plane than if would help alleviate the "huge wing" look you referred to...
 
Thanks everyone. I've got lots of new ideas now, that's exactly what I was hoping for. I love this forum because everyone on here puts forth good constructive ideas. I'll post more pics. as I get more complete.

The challenge will be in reworking those C-channels the front shackle mount. FWIW, those are maybe the worst looking part of the bumper area anyway (IMO).

I could probably just take some 10 ga and cut out a triangular gusset piece. maybe bend a 90 on the one side to finish it off some?
I attached a picture from the back of the bumper. I've since add a stiffner gusset down the center of the wing and capped them. I also put 6 holes in the bottom of the cradle to make it easier to clean out and lighten some.
The cradle is 1/4" and the wings are 10 ga.

i was thinking a cross between blues pic and what i said.. but maybe coming 2/3 of the way out toward the tip.... all the way out might be too much, whereas 50% kind of highlights the piece too much.. 2/3 with just a bit of transition angle might be nice and subtle.... along the front edge, and angled back like this..... the angle giving it a bit of that Gauntlet look... kind of like this...

I'm thinking it's gonna take the milkcrate, can of beer and some cardboard approach.
 
Seeing the back, I'd also extend the frame mounting plates on the side of the cradle so they go up and fill that gap of the wings. Boxing those ends would greatly strengthen them.

I like it but it looks a little slim for a full-size Chevy. I like the idea of a round angled piece at the bottom and possibly a small mini stinger up top. Something like that will in no way change the approach angle because your winch is still the lowest part of the bumper. And will hit first. That’s why I’d like to see something else protecting that fair lead up front. Mine is just bent c channel but about 12 inch wide. 1/4 inch. Good job for a first build though. I went simple because I don’t have great fab skills.
 
Look at "The Turd" which is truck of the month and February on CK5 calendar. That bumper is somewhat similar to what you're trying to do.
