i`m gettin real sick of the rust on my front winch bumper and the chrome is pitted real bad and starting to chip off on the diamond plate...i was thinking of painting it black??ideas?

i'd be concerned that just painting over what you've got would chip as it continues to rust underneath. probably want to do some refinishing, if you will, on it first. maybe use one of the antirust-primer paints and then paint it black. that would be my route were it me.

Powdercoat it!! Eastwood has a coating (in black, silver, red) that will stop the rust and is UV protected. Look for their rust ecapsulator. Can get it in spray or brush/roll on. Stuff is pretty thick and works good. Hit it with a wire wheel and just spray, brush or roll on. Ive used the stuff on wheel wells, under hood, and push bumper. So far, its lasted a couple years with no rust seaping through.

take it off and send it over to your local blaster... they'll blast it to perfect steel for prolly under $100.. prime and paint...

well I think what I am just gonna do is just sos it.prime it.then just paint it.or powedercoat it like he said....can you give me a link to where I can buy that stuff???

i love bringing old threads back to life...its finally warm enough to paint....too bad i only have enough time to prime it...grrr:mad:

alright....it came out straight i guess..has kind of a textured feel from it...i think it was the primer??....but i think today i will through a couple more thin coats of gloss black on it to give it a little more shine....i`ll post up pics later

dry/overspray more than likely, common with rattle cans... maybe run a little 320/400 over it quick or a scuff pad to knock it down a little before proceeding.. Or, Blast away... :D

how much would getting it blasted cost?

Well, if you pull it off and brought it to their yard, it would probably be $75 or so.. That what my local guys would charge... Maybe check your phonebook under "sandblasting" and call a few places, tell em what you got..

Is it not coming out the way you want? PM me if you wanna talk about it... :D

ok i think i`m gonna set up to get the bumper blasted within a week or so so a quick ?......what exactly do i do when i get it back and would it be worth powder coating it or would painting it be fine?

Well, I don't have clue as to powdercoat costs, but a few in here are very experienced with it... I'd assume you'd be looking at $100 to $200 but I may be way off.. I will tell you tho that powdercoat is pretty unrepairable,, if chipped, etc..

As far as paint goes, you'll wanna knock down the bare steel with a sander of some sort, or at least run over it by hand with something in the 150 to 180 grit range.. Then get a pisscoat of zinc primer on it.. But we can go into that more when the time comes...

I had both my bumpers blasted and powdercoated a couple of weeks ago, locally it cost me 350.00. The finish is excellent, tuff and kinda bling (went with a metallic silver). Now if I can just get the body coated :doah:
