Optima batteries

[ QUOTE ]
I have yet to see a single discharged one take a recharge, either.

[/ QUOTE ]
I've done it three time w/ my red top (infact that is why I now have a yellow top, too) and it still takes a charge just fine.

I finally killed the red top in my Jeep after 6 years of trail use and frequent winching. It would still hold a charge but not for very long. I replaced it with.....another red top. Best battery I've owned.

Never said it was impossible, but I have never had one take a re-charge. The guy from JCI told me that it could be done, but it must be recharged right away.

I have drained mine to the point that it read 2 volts on my fluke mutlimeter two seperate times. It charged back up just fine that was over a year and a half ago. They just take a reeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaalllllllllllly loooooooonnnnnngggg time to charge.

That's funny, they're supposed to charge faster than any other battery according to the guy from JCI. They have a lower internal resistance than any other battery on the market.

[/ QUOTE ] /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gifI tested mine with a midtronics battery tester and it did rapid charge up to 75% then it took 12 hours at 2amps to get it to 100%

Red top = starting

Blue top = marine

Yellow top = deep cycle

IIRC

So for 4x4ing, would the yellow one be good? I looked threw this post and found a bunch of different answers???

yellow top is good for accesories (winch, lights, radio, etc. . .)
red top is good for starting the truck

1. I think Optimas and the competitive batteries that are similar are total trash.

[/ QUOTE ]
Why is that? /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Constant complaints from customers that bought them and brought them back for replacement and said that they wanted a refund and were going back to a plate type battery because they would never own another AGM again is the reason I think they're crap.

I have yet to see a single discharged one take a recharge, either.

The rep from Johnson Controls told me that's just the nature of the design. With no free acid, they sulfate quikcly if discharged and not immediately recharged.

Ive seen 4 optima's come in as cores. 3 of them we have charged and ended up being good batteries. often the plates melt together, so if you drop it on the concrete from waste level it will break them apart. it sound crazy but ive seen this happen with 3 of 4 optimas.so they can recharge and they are not what i call crap considering they outlast 90% of the batteries i see /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif

I've got a blue top, deep cycle, marine battery. I love it. I've left things on for a couple days, completely draining the battery on two seperate occasions (working on this or that). I jump started the truck and drove around for a while. Then it sat in the driveway for three months. Started up just fine. The battery is three years old now and still works great.

Drop it from waist level on concrete huh?

I'll have to try that with the next one. I bet I've thrown away 20 or more Optimas this year. Not a single one would take a charge.

I have two johnson controls plate type batteries in my rig.

I just wanted to confirm that this DOES INDEED WORK! Tried it yesterday with a "presumed" dead Optima. Dropped it twice (about 3 feet) and hooked the charger up to it. Worked like a charm.

Told ya so!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/whistling.gif /forums/images/graemlins/histerical.gif /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

Sounds crazy enough to work. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Would make me nervous to do so though.

Well that sucks - I saw one in the junkyard a year ago and ask how much for it - they wanted $30 or so and I passed. /forums/images/graemlins/doah.gif

For $30 I would have passed too. They're only ~$100 new. I might have tried for $10.
