Optima battery problems

I have had great luck with Interstate Batteries. Last a long time and good warranty.

Sent this off today. Let's see what Optima has to say.

Optima, 5/13/08

We have a small fleet of 8 trucks which we have been slowly changing over to the Optima batteries as new batteries are required. The first two batteries seemed to work fine, the third, a Yellow Top, was a disaster. It started losing it’s charge after 6 months. We checked the charging system and electrical system and all seemed fine. It finally gave out, lost it’s charge and would not take a charge. We ended up buying a battery from a local parts store as we needed the truck immediately. We had the Yellow Top replaced under warranty and put it in another truck. We had the same issues, 6 months and the battery would not hold or take a charge. Incidentally, the first truck is doing fine with it’s replacement battery.

I’m wondering if there are any quality control or design issues with your batteries? Optima batteries are three times the cost of regular batteries and are now proving to last only about 1/10th the time. Before I give up on Optima entirely, is there any explanation for this or plans to rectify the current situation?

Thank you,

dead optimas

I dont know if I missed it in the forum, but Interstate has a charger that will blast your optima into taking a charge, ctek battery battery part # us3300 for around 70 dollars. It will charge motorcycle and regular batterys. Also you will get mixed results if you use a normal charger on your optimas. Got the info from my big brother who runs a napa. I have had no issues with my blue tops.

I don't know, $200 for the batter and now $70 for the charger for when it dies (which seems to be quite often). The only real benefit of the Optima is no liquid. I think I'll stick with the $79 Kragen battery that seems to last 5 to 7 years with no special charger required.

Optima's are AGM's, they require no special charging needs... Gels do...

exides, die hards, and oddsseys are good batteries. i have a die hard gold in my k10 which was originally bought for my moms plymouth horizon and my k10 has been sitting for 2 months without being started regularly for the past month and a half and when i just went to start it the k10 fired right up. always turns over. holds a charge great. my dads got an exide in his 68 barracuda and its been sitting for almost a year now. still cranks right up and it to has not been started regularly. i was going to replace it with an optima but now im not so sure i want to. has anyone had a holley annihilator race cell battery?
