So the rig was sitting for a few months and the battery (optima red top). i put it on the trickle charger over night and put it back in the truck this morning. Truck started fine and I thought it drove fine on the way to work. its was about a 15 minute ride on the highway with the rpm's at about a constant 2700 rpms. I got to work and found the top of the battery bulging and one of the vents was off blowing fumes out and hissing. Anyone have any expierence like this with an optima? Alternator is a 140 amp powermaster. both the battery and the alternator are less than a year old.

Sounds like it's time to buy a REAL battery. Optima's USED to be good but quality has deteriorated over the lest 10 years. I have never owned an optima but know many people who did and they all had nothing but problems with them. I've been running Interstate batteries for probably 25 years now (all different vehicles) without any issues. I have never gotten less than 10 years from a battery yet. Most "Wet" batteries start giving problems anywhere between 3-5 years and by the fifth year are pretty much needing replaced. If you NEED a dry cell battery then there are other options out there but most people don't NEED a dry battery they WANT a dry battery.

You are right, I didnt need one, I guess i just wanted one. What would the benefits be of running a dry battery vs non dry battery?

A dry battery can be mounted on it's side or even upside down (this is why optimas became so popular especailly in the street rod world).

This exact same thing happened to me just two weeks ago. I could even hear the battery boiling inside. I think Optimas are just not what they used to be.

i went and bought an autozone battery for the time being. I just dont understand how optima can charge so much for a battery of such poor quality. They will never get another dime from me
