Optimizer 6500 Diesel

LOL, i think that IS the reasonable price....

I haven't seen these at this low of a price. They were over 6K a couple years ago when the Optimizer came out. Doesn't fit exactly the same as the old 6.2/6.5 either. It has a lower block girdle/stiffener that is about 4" deep the bolts on where the oil pan would go, then a flat cast aluminum oild pan bolts to that which in turn causes the entire lower end of the engine to be lower than the old oil pan. There were a bunch of other improvements made and the guy I read about putting it in a 90s truck loved it.

Considering what diesels go for, and the kind of power the turbo-diesel optimizer 6.5 is going for, similar horsepower diesels will be that or more in price. Sounds like that's a pretty decent deal for that.

Does this cause any clearance issues?

It does sound like a decent price for a new diesel enging but it would be worth more than the truck it is going in (old CUCV M1008).

Does any one here run one? How long have you had it? What kind of driving differences are there? Any change in mileage?

The engine Desertrat is talking about is the P400, and is a newer design than the engine described in that ad. The P400 has a forged crank and a casting design newer than the Nov. 2001 date denoted.

That engine advertised is a good one, but just be warned that it is not the absolute latest/greatest. I've got a milsurp one I bought from a gov't auction.

It does not have the cast oilpan and therefore will bolt right up and there are no fitment issues with it.

Be warned that you need to be careful as there are a lot of Chinese knockoff 6.5 parts/engines out there being advertised as the real deal. I don't know anything about that particular website.

Is there a site to check on the military surplus engines?

www.govliquidation.com

That's pretty well the only site, and the process can be a PITA. You also have to wait until your end-use cert is approved.

I ended up stumbling onto my engine. I think the search term I used was "diesel." Usually people are on the good engines like flies on poop, but mine was all by itself instead of a big lot, was at a location not known for engines, and was listed as unserviceable. I thought otherwise based on looking at the pictures, and I was right - they just didn't have a way to test run it. I ended up with a brand new Optimizer 6500 from Hill AFB for $1020.

Look on ebay. There were a lot of 6.2s taken out several years ago and there are wharehouses full of them across the south. THey were going for 600 each at the time.
