ORD shackle flip and spring ends don't line up.

I'm in the middle of my rear lift and I just noticed this. The truck is a 1982 1 ton crew cab. I ordered the 1 ton flip brackets and that's what the packing slip says too, so I have no reason to think they are the wrong brackets. At first I thought the axle was shifted to one side but both of the spring ends are to far to the center of the truck. I have not loosened the spring pack on the axle or the other end of the spring on the frame. Any thoughts on what is causing this and how to fix it?

any missing crossmembers in the frame ?

did you measure the width of the hangers and springs at that point ?

also years of abuse can tweek springs and or make them not line up so easy . might be in your best interests to undo the ubolts and let stuff hang all out and go slack then hook them up .

Reverse U-bolts?

Where are your shackles and why do the spring not look long enough?

X2 on pulling the U-bolts and just fighting individual leaf packs instead of the whole rear end.

Thanks guys. I didn't have a lot of time to look into it today but I hope to tomorrow.

This is my first truck of this style so I'm not sure if there are any missing cross members. Nothing has ever made me think there are any missing. I will measure the width of the hangers and springs. I also thought to compare the stock shackle hangers to the ORDs. This truck has some rust on it but I haven't seen anything that makes me think it was abused. I ordered some ORD heavy duty shackles but they haven't gotten to me yet and that's why they aren't in the picture. I think the springs look short because there is no weight on them right now so they are totally relaxed.

Thank you guys again for your input.

I found this on the ORD site: "The difference is that the spring center spacing on the 1-ton axle is only 40 1/2", and on the rest of the trucks, it's 42 1/2"." I measured and the shackle hanger center spacing and it's 40.75" so these are the correct hangers. The spring center spacing is 39.5". That's a difference of 1.25"

If I loosen the U-bolts, can I reuse them?

.

It isn't recommended because they are a torque to yield nut which stretches over time.

fixed it for ya... ;)

OP... technically, your not supposed to, but many people do without issue.. whether you buy new or reuse, just make sure that you go back and recheck them for tightness a couple times after you start driving it...

So your axle has the center pin holes 39.5" on center? What did it come out of? It's possible you can make everything go together loose and then twist the springs by tightening. You probably could also cheat by having the hangers narrowed a bit (let the bushings take up the slight angle), but it's probably better to look into moving the spring perches on the axle. Are these new hangers sitting at the same width as the front hangers?

If it was mine, I wouldn't throw out U-bolts that haven't even been driven on yet. I would only replace them if the threads looked damaged upon removal. Sometimes you find that they don't line up with spring plates the same after they've been torqued, but that's not too hard to work around.

Thanks again guys. I believe this axle is the original axle for this truck. It even has the load sensing brake valve still hooked up. The heavy duty shackles should get to me today so I'm going to investigate it more tonight. I did talk to ORD and they seemed stumped as well. Chris was wondering if maybe the spring center pin(s) are broken. I'll let you know what I figure out.

first order

unbolt the springs from the axle .

hook up the shackles and then to flip kit just fine.

reattach the axle it will be just fine.

remove the load sensor vale and reblead the brakes . those didn't work the best to begin with and by now are junk on almost all.

This project just keeps getting more and more involved.... I got the super shackles today and started working on the truck tonight. I cut the u bolts off because they didn't look reusable. Everything looked like it would line up ok until I discovered at least three broken leaves in one spring pack.... So now I need new rear springs. Can you buy replacement 1 ton springs? I liked the idea of keeping my load capacity in the rear. If not, I would need some lift springs except that I cut up my stock shackle hangers in order to remove them (and I like the heavy duty ORD hangers). Another option would be to buy a 2.5" shackle flip and buy 2" lift springs if they make them for 1 tons. I really wanted to stick with a 4" lift and that's what the shocks are sized for.

I think I'm going to have to sleep on this one. If you guys have any suggestions, please let me know.
