Anyone have experience w/ ORD soft top for the 73-91 body style? Any good? How long does it last, does it need to be replaced after a number of years? It is kind of expensive but I'm thinking it may be a good investment.
I just installed my softopper last night, I love it so far!!! Softopper makes it for ORD... I'd cut out the middle man if I were you, in case you have any problems. I'll post up pics later tonight, my photobucket account isn't working yet again. As far as how long they last, they've only been making them for about a year and a half for our blazers, so time will tell, but I'm really pleased with quality so far.
I'm interested in one of these too, especially after looking at rebuilding my tailgate. I think I'd like to just get rid of the glass and regulator and go with the soft top, to save some weight and all that jazz. Plus, I like the idea of rolling up the sides without having to take the top completely down.
I can't tell for sure from the pics on the Softopper site, but I'm curious as to how it attaches across the tailgate. Looks like some sort of track. I wonder if it is lockable.
We took the family out for a sunset cruise last night for ice cream with the sides and rear window rolled up, it was great!!! My 8, 5, and 3 year olds loved it! I think leaving the roof on kept them from getting beat by the wind, I'm still learning the top, but it took me literally 2 or 3 minutes to open and close it up for the night. Heck, even my wife liked riding in the truck!!! I'm seriously looking for a rollbar after seeing what happened to Chalet2506 when he rolled his Blazer a few months ago. I have too much precious cargo back there.
There's a metal bar that clicks into 2 mounting brackets that are mounted to the rear of the bedrails of the soft top frame. They include 3 Velcro strips you can install to the tailgate, but most guys haven't been using them from what I've read. I haven't installed them yet, because my trucks getting painted soon.
I just put a Softopper on my 74:
Good - Easy installation, sturdy material, good communication with factory, Safari
option is great, with tailgate swap you lose almost 400lbs.
Not so Good:
No seal at all around the door glass and leaves up to 1" gaps on the sides.
A flap on top of the window gets caught in the a-pillar every time the door is closed.
At highway speeds water drips in from the windshield header.
Took 3 tops to get one without any defects
Yeah, the '73 to '75 full top is a lot different from what we have to deal with on the half cabs... As much as I'd love to have a '73 to '75, I'm thankful for the halfcab. It's really enjoyable with the top off, but you still get some shade!!! One thing that made installation a lot easier was a helper, I bought a buddy dinner and beer for helping me install mine. The extra set of eyes and hands made the job go a lot easier. Not to mention kept me from having to climb in and out of the truck as much.
There has never been a soft top for a K/5 that seals at the door glass. The Bestop on the '71 I had didn't seal there. How can they? The glass sits outside against the top. I would just put it out over the glass when I got out. But,it never leaked at the windshield. Same goes for the STC I had on another 1st gen.
