I was going to attach images but I can't seem to. I was told this is a late 70s stamping so it must have been replaced.
Now I am trying to decide if I want to rebuild it for more power or torque or just replace it since its not the right stamping anyway. PG
You have to have some posts accumulated before you can post photos I think,if your a paid member here--if your not,I'm not sure if you can still put photos up or not..
"VE" is not a typical engine ID code from the 70's,it might be a "VF",which is a crate engine or replacement one from a GM dealer like a Mr.Goodwrench ..a "CE" code is a factory replacement ,the "CE" stands for "complete engine"..
A 72 GM truck or car engine should have a three digit code at the end of the stamping on the passenger side of the block just in front of the cylinder head..a code on a truck would begin with T,like "TDR"--car engines had codes beginning with "C" , like "CDE"..also part of the vehicles VIN number will be stamped before or near that code, that would indicate its the original engine it came with,or "matching numbers"..
Look for a casting date and casting number, both on the bellhousing flange. If there is no other stamped numbers/letters on the front pad it is likely a replacement or over the counter engine.
