Over engine creeper

Got some cash for Christmas and I was thinking about buying one of those over the engine creepers. Any thoughts/feedback?

Saw them at SEMA 10 years ago. Pretty cool idea. I don’t know if I would buy one for as little as I need it. My issue is laying on my belly on that pad trying to do something. It ain’t comfortable for me to work like that. Hell I don’t sleep on my belly for that same reason. But I’m a big boy and have as far from washboard abs as a dude could get. Not having the beer gut might make a difference.

I’d say try before you buy before investing the bucks on it. I don’t know where anybody has one locally to buy one though.
 
I have been meaning to build one from an old engine stand or cherry picker base next time I have the welder fired up.
 
I have one here at work that just sits in the corner covered in dust. The little bit I've used one I felt like it hurt my ribs laying in that position for long. I just like to pull front tires off if I'm doing a big engine job and then set it on the ground or as close to possible to get it low. I am 6'3" though so that's all it takes for me with most trucks. I also will jack the rear up higher to get the front even lower at times.

Sometimes my back gets sore from bending over the engine bay so I was hoping a creeper like this would help with that.

8.1’s don’t have distributators. Just saying. You don’t need a creeper. Just a bigger big block. How’s that for saving you money on the creeper?

I was actually thinking about that when I was typing that last response, :D

It really bothers me more working on the C10 because it's shorter I end up bent over at the waist. The crew cab is taller and I can lean on the fender for support.

I measured the height of the crew cab and the topside creeper I was looking at is tall enough. I'm worried that the grill guard will keep the creeper from being able to get very far over the engine.

Ideally it needs a base like a cherry picker that is wide enough to fit on either side of a 40" tire so I could roll it in from the side.
 
What I should do is put a board on the forklift forks to lay on.

I found out about the topside creepers on another forum that recommended them for changing spark plugs on factory 8.1s :haha: The rear ones are so hard to get to in the 03-06 Avys/suburbans that I got one to change the plugs, made the job easier.

I like mine; makes certain jobs easy if you can't crawl into an engine bay with all the electronics that surrounds newer vehicles. On a K-5 its sometimes quicker to hop in there to get something done....

I used mine to do filter and belt changes this summer in a truck similar to the one in the photos above. There are a few bolts that are a pain to get to, but laying on the creeper gets you a balanced, two handed angle of attack...

Sometimes just having it for a mini ladder to get up into an engine bay versus a stool that always seems to tip/shoot out from under me is helpful....
 
so there were 2 top side creepers at my work, I tried to use them they are uncomfortable. I found that if I put large kneeling pad across the core supports fan shrouds hoses and what not it was much more comfortable to lay across the engine and reach stuff.
 
We built one out of an old outboard motor stand. I have used it multiple times for lots of projects. Beats standing on a stool or milk crate for sure.
 
This is my other go-to for engine work. Just beware of the cheaper aluminum versions, I had one and the rivets holding it together all came loose and it got real wobbly.
