So I turned my truck on in the barn the other night. My buddy dumped a gas can of something in the tank? Basically I looked at the gauge and it said it was at 215 and started smOking out the exhaust. Do you think it's a head gasket?

Pull the dip stick, if its light brown and does not look like oil, you have water in it some how.

If the stuff he dumped in the tank was Seafoam then it'll smoke for a while. I've never used it but maybe someone who has can tell you if it raises the temp.

Is there fluid in it?

How long has the truck been sitting? Could be the radiator is shot too, if the coolant wasn't/isn't fresh.

Smoking could simply have been condensation as the exhaust heated up, no? What color/smell of smoke?

If everything is working as designed, should at best barely exceed rated thermostat temp at idle, but in terms of hurting the motor, agreed, not likely at that low of a temp.

220* or so is where GM apparently drew the line, that was the cut in temp when they started using electric fans on the small block.

Sounds more like he put his 2 cycle chainsaw gas in it. If so it will make it smoke but won't hurt it, just top off the tank to thin it out. I know people who put transmission fluid in their tank to keep their injectors clean. I prefer Sea Foam, it's good stuff, Deep Creep is Sea Foam in a spray can, it's very good for removing carbon build up, but I'm thinking you were low on gas and got some 2 cycle oil, which will make smoke.

Sounds like mix fuel As well. Top it off with fresh to thin out the oil. Will not hurt anything as long as you thin it out. Otherwise it can foul the plugs. Some people mix in smokeless 2 stroke oil as a additive to use as upper engine lube. 1 ounce to a gallon will smooth out older engines sometimes.

I fixed up a vehicle for an old girlfriend she bought, it had been sitting for more than 3 years. Checked everything out, changed the oil and whatnot, put 5 gallons of fresh gas in it, fired it up and it smoked like crazy for about a half an hour or so. Just needed to burn the old gas out of the lines and get everything in the motor back to normal working conditions.
