overheating

I believe i have an overheating issue. i do not have an operational temp gauge in the truck right now. It happens when the truck has been idling for an extended amount of time or even when i drive it for a short period. i was thinking that it was the radiator but am unsure. im just looking for some guidance on where to start so that i can solve this.

You need to start by installing a temp gauge. What makes you think you have an overheating problem if you don't even have a gauge to judge by? :confused:

X2. Plus, what happens? Does the fan come on after idling a while? or does it make steam?
 
i guess i could have added that after extended idling or short trips the engine wont stay running. i have to feather the throttle to keep it running.
 
i need to fill out my sig. sorry for the lack of info, thanks for the help so far though.
its a 355 with an edelbrock carb not sure of the size. i just had my turbo 350 rebuilt. it runs great for about the first 10 min then starts to get rough and then dies.
 
sounds like you arnt getting any gas to the engine its vapor locking have you changed the fuel pump and are you getting gas to the engine after it dies and you try to start it again?
 
yes it will start back up after it dies i just have to pedal it to keep it running. it sat for about 6 months or so while i had the tranny out of it and it never did it before it sat for that long. But like i said it runs flawlessly for about 7-10 min and then it wont idle, and i just boggs down and dies.
 
Roz's truck did this and he had an edelbrock with electric choke. The choke was corroded and would not slide smoothly. The choke heater was working but the linkages were sticking not letting the choke open. I would check the choke as well as all of the vacuum lines like was said earlier.

ok so i figured out that it is my choke on the edelbrock sticking. it will run great and then start to die and i can manually (close?) the choke and it will go back to a smooth idle. should i just take the carb off and take the linkages apart and clean them?? or should i take it to a carb shop?? also when i get that figured out, which setting should i set the choke to??

Choke should open as the engine warms up.

I'm not familiar with those carbs, but most have choke adjustment of some sort, so that it closes when the engine is cold, but opens fully when the engine is up to operating temp.
 
I'm not a mechanic, so I may be wrong, but the way I adjusted the Edelcrap on my 81 was (assuming it's electronic) rotate the choke controller counterclockwise until it's for sure open, pump the gas twice, full throttle, then twist the controller clockwise until the choke closes, then tighten the screw down. Also, make sure all the linkages are clean, and the area in side the controller is REALLY clean, then adjust. I gave up after a while and converted it to manual choke, and still had that problem when the engine would get hot, or for a while after I got at a crazy angle. finally got rid of it for a q-jet, and never looked back.
