Overland trip: CK5 wheels the UP 2016 (trip report and pictures going up!)

Sounds like getting a sticker wouldn't hurt, and its better to be safe then sorry.

Yes the truck will be street legal, I haven't had it on the road yet. I'm still finishing things up on it, should be ready in a couple weeks.

Ethan, where did you plan on starting this grand adventure from? Depending on how much seat time I have in my truck I was debating on towing it up there verse's driving it.
Would there be a place to park a truck and trailer??

I have room for you to leave a trailer at the HorseBarn, that would be a fine meetup point.

I'm putting together a scheduling PM.

Given how untested your truck will be, how soggy of trails do you want to hit? It's a long walk back to the trailer if something does break. My K5 only has a thousand miles or so since I got it on the road in December.

I don't know that I'd run last year's river crossing with just 2 untested rigs (and no backup rig). And I don't like mud bogs in general. So I was planning on hitting some of the kinder pieces of last year's route. Stuff like this is fun but pretty low-risk. That's the purpose of a trial run, right?

Is the truck done yet?

Getting closer. Have the bumpers and flatbed just about ready.

Rebuilt my rear leaf packs yesterday. My main on the driver side was snapped. Had some spare packs out of a tow truck (13 leaves plus two overloads per side) Did a little mix and match plus some bushings. Was guessing on how many to run, ended up running 8+overload. Found my 3" tapered blocks to correct the pinion after the shackle flip

Hoping to tackle the trans/transfer swap this week. Then driveshafts and brakes. Have a truck field party on the 6th hoping to have it ready. It's far enough away that I should get some seat time to find any bugs

I'm wanting to head North the weekend of the 29th (3 weeks from now). If you're done in time you could join us. :)

Looks like a fine parking spot, I should have a bunch of support gear with the truck.... but I get what your saying on running two untested trucks could be interesting if things go south..
The trail run looks fine, I'm not looking to go bogging either but exploring..yes..

Need any tracks or stuff from me?

Of course! Tracks are the easy way to find things! I will admit to spending too much time yesterday trying to decide how to retrace your steps up to Cliff Mine. I can see the mine, Cliff road, and several turnoffs, but it's just not the same as blindly following someone else around... :haha:

On the bright side, I am getting more familiar with BackCountryNavigator. It definitely takes the work out of navigating, thanks for the introduction.

Really wanting too. Haven't made much progress on the truck with Easter and I've started trucking at work. I've got 38 hours in since Monday.

Hoping to knock a bunch off the list this weekend. I'll keep you posted but there's a lot to do yet

38 hours, eh? Dat's a bunch.

The U.P. will be ready whenever you are. We're planning on several weekend trips this summer. July and August will be busy.

30's damn, what's with that??

I don't know, man. After a really warm spring, the Keweenaw is back underneath a dusting of snow again. Light snow now doesn't worry me (it will melt), but the rain we've had, combined with the rain we're expecting, makes me think we're looking at a cold, soggy, muddy weekend. With swampy or flooded trails. :doah:

If the forecast doesn't change, we're gonna bail and go to the Sturgeon Bay Shipyard Tours that weekend. More funner that way.

Forecast for Houghton:

The weather forecast changes pretty quickly near the big lake.

Yessir, but the water doesn't drain that quickly. It's already saturated here, and they have been getting equal or greater rainfall. Soggy tenting doesn't have mama's approval right now.

So that's what I'll be watching over the next week.
