Vehicle: 1998 Chevy K1500 Suburban, Vortec 5.7 engine.

I scanned for the CEL which was lit and got: P0343 Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit from the Troubleshooter in my scanner.

So I went and replaced the distributor anyway since now both screw holes for the cap screws were broken out and I had just got a new aluminum housing unit from Jeggs for another 5.7 Vortec that I am working on.

This Jeggs unit had a new CPS unit in it, so I put it in, set the cam reference angle to 0 degrees +/- 2 degrees and started it up, cleared the codes and the same code P0343 reset again. Hmmmmm

OK - I read the cam position in the live data and got +29 degrees. Hmmmmm again.

I twisted the distributor while it was running and snapped the throttle over 1,000 RPM to reset the scanner and got it to 0 degrees again while running.

Feeling pretty good now, I shut the engine down, slammed the hood and tried a restart.

The engine now sounded like it had 13:1 compression and 40 degree static advance. Hmmmmmm again.

I re-hooked everything up and reset the Cam Angle to 0 degrees again.

I scanned it after another restart and after I Cleared Code P0343 --- the cam reference signal was 29 degrees again.

Huh? Help!
