I've got a 15' Vanguard Banshee Mk2 that is in need of a transom.

I've done plenty of research on how guys are doing it. Haven't found much on banshees, but the glastron gt150 is slightly similar. Have found plenty on them boats.

I've read there's certain styles of exterior grade wood that is comparable to marine grade wood at a cheaper cost.

Also, quite unsure on what to use for epoxy, resin, fiberglass mat etc etc.

Finally, I don't plant to pull the top cap off the boat to do it unless I simply can't get in there to do it. I have read about guys doing it with the cap still on but it is a PITA.

Any tips on what to use, process's to try are much appreciated.

just circ saw the outer skin... I've done dozens of these jobs... post pics.. I'll check back in tonight...

I got the boat for a song basically. It's got a Tower of power 100 horse on it. Basically a 2 owner boat all its life(father/son). Was never really abused, just left in the elements uncovered hence how the transom went rotten.

Unsure on the stringers, have to do some more digging on it once it's home.

It was always stored nose up with the back of the hull supported on the ground, so I suspect the stringers may not be so bad b/c of that.

that pic doesn't do me any good.. I meant a pic of the transom...

if the transom rotted, it had intrusion, so that isn't "just cuz it was left in the weather".. it had a deck joint, rubrail, etc issue...

like I said, I do this chit in my sleep...

Boat is still at the lake, haulin it home in the next week or 2.

It cracked in the corners, water got in there. And continues to do so. It's sagged a good 1-2" from where it should be.

not sure what you mean there... :dunno:

like I alluded to before.... you control depth circ saw it around the perimeter about 2" in from the edge... remove the outer, than the core, an air hammer does wonders for this.... grind/prep inner.. cut/fit new ply.. wetbed it in.. layup new outer.. or sometimes you can grind/prep the circ sawed piece, wetbed that back in.. than bandaid it around the perimeter...

poly vs epoxy, wood, glass types, is a whole other topic...

ah, ok... I generally do my stuff with marine grade and polyester.... the marine grade is more money, but you save using poly over epoxy... epoxy being a bit more user-friendly for ams... it is also 3x's as strong, but 3x's the cost of poly... much slower/time consuming process tho....

I run marine ply cuz I'm a pro marina, and I'm expected to do jobs correctly.. comebacks aren't an option...

you CAN use quality grade plys, if you do good work and apply a few saturation tricks... I've done it plenty in the past... but if it get's intrusion again, it will fail much quicker than the marine version...

there are some definite do's, and dont's with fiberglass work... so ask away when they arise.. :D

Go to iboats forum that web page covers every boat ever made that is where I go when I have problems on my boat. They have a restoration page that has a wealth of information on transom repair and what materials are good also how it should be sealed up to keep it from happening again.

I used to be a regular contributor over there, till it became just lijke work.. i would spend hr's every night walking people thru repairs... do enough of that all day...

just have to watch who's giving you advice, pro's, great.. boat owners, not so much...

Found a couple threads on iboats already, been reading em over and over, over the last year.

Should have it home this weekend fwiw.

take a couple from up underneath... where the topsides hang over the back.....
